Guide: Add Text to Video in Microsoft Photos on Windows 10: Guide

Once reality realizes you that Windows Movie Maker no longer exists on Windows 10, start exploring its replacement, the Photos app. The editor may look grim at first, but spend a few minutes with it and you’ll be amazed at the video editing capabilities. Not only can you trim videos, create slideshows and add filters to videos, but you can also add text to a video in the Microsoft Photos app. By adding text to a video, we can create title cards, explain the content of the video, give credits, and do similar things. If you want to add text to your slideshow or video with this app, you are in the right place. In this post, we will tell you how to add a caption or title to a video in the Microsoft Photos video editor. As a bonus, we will also share a few tips and tricks related to the same. Let’s start.

Add text to individual clips

If you are creating a video from scratch in Microsoft Photos app that consists of multiple individual video clips or photos, then here is the following how to add text to it. Step 1: Launch the Photos app and go to the video editor screen. Step 2: Under the Storyboard section, click the clip you want to add text to. Then click on the text option present in the toolbar above. You can also right-click the clip and go to Edit> Text.

Step 3: On the next screen, type your text in the text box on the right.

Step 4: Choose your font style and position from the available options on the right. Tip Hover your mouse pointer over the styles available under Animated Text Style and scroll down to view more styles.

Step 5: Change the position of the two blue markers on the slider to set the text duration for the selected clip.

Step 6: Press play button to preview the text.

Step 7: Hit the Done button

Repeat the steps above to add different text to each clip.

Add the same text to video in Windows 10

The video editor in the Photos app has the disadvantage that you cannot add the same text to the entire clip. For example, if you need to add a text watermark or a website URL, then you need to add the text repeatedly to the individual clips. There is a simple solution to prevent this. What you need to do is export or save the video once you are done creating and editing it in Photos app. Then you have to start a new project and add the newly created video. Since it is now only a single clip, add text as mentioned above and use the markers to increase the text duration. Then it will be displayed for the entire clip duration.

Remove text from video

To delete the text you added to your clip, you don’t have to delete the clip entirely. Instead, click on the clip and choose the Text option as you did while adding the text. Then hit the small cross button next to the text in the typing area. You can also press the Backspace key to delete it.

Tips and Tricks for text in video editor from Photos app

Here is how to Enhance the text added to the videos taken in the Photos app.

1. Add a title card

Instead of adding text to an image or your video, you can add it on a solid background. For that you need to add a title card. To do this, follow these steps: Step 1: Click on the clip for which you want to add a title card and click the Add title card option in the toolbar.

Step 2: Click the title card that has been added and then click the Text option.

Step 3: Then add the text as you did above. Choose the style, layout and duration according to your requirement. Hit the Done button going back.

You can also change the background color of the title card. To do this, click on the title card and click on the Background option. Then choose the color.

2. Add a background image from Bing

If the text doesn’t look right on the solid background or on your photos / videos, you can add a new background image using Bing directly in the Photos apps. To do this, click on the Add option present under the Project library option and select From the Internet.

Then use the search box to find the related image. Press the insert button to add the image. Note: By default, the Creative Commons license filter is enabled for the images.

You can find the image under the project library. Drag it to the storyboard and add your text. Tip If the image has black borders, right click on it and go to Resize> Remove Black Bars.

3. Create credits

Since you can only add one text to a clip, you have to wonder how to add credits. If you have a limited number of credits, press the Enter key while entering the text to create a new line. That would help in adding credits to your video.

4. Animated text

All font styles offered by Microsoft Photos are animated by nature. For them to work, the duration of the clip must be at least 3-4 seconds. Press play button to preview the animation.

The more the merrier

So that is how to add text to your video in the Photos apps. Unfortunately, the feature lacks some things. First, you cannot add more than one text to one video clip. You need to split the video and then add multiple texts. Second, the Photos app cannot be used to add subtitles as it is not correct featuresAnd last but not least: you cannot even change the font size of the text. I really hope Microsoft adds these features to improve the overall video editing experience on Windows 10. The next up Not a fan of the Microsoft Photos app? Check out the 5 best alternatives.
