The Best All Time Video Game Characters

[contentsdisabled] The game has come a long way in terms of storytelling. Complex and profound histories were written in these immense simulated universes. However, the best stories are the ones with the best characters. When players experience a story, they tend to remember those belonging to characters they loved. Of course, this is especially true for the main character. It took a while, but video games ended up invading our daily lives, first taking kids to arcades to play their favorite titles, then moving into our home, and then moving into our pockets. In the decades since video games emerged, the world has been blessed with a treasure trove of great characters. There are characters we hate. There are characters we love. Those who instill fear in our hearts. You can see a completely different picture of how video games showcase their most influential characters if you remove them from the equation and instead focus on those who made their debut this century. These characters are a powerful reminder of how games in general have changed since the Xbox and PlayStation 2.

M. Bison

The dictator for some, M. Bison is the personification final evil and the main antagonist of the Street Fighter series, even not appearing until Street Fighter II. Like many villains, the goal final of M. Bison is world domination. He tries to achieve this through his underground crime syndicate known as Shadaloo. His in-game powers include a famous energy attack where he spins in the air at his opponent. He is known for the almost incomprehensible “Ooga” he yells during the fight as he punches.

Dr Albert W. Wily

Dr. Wily is Mega Man’s enemy; however, you probably haven’t heard of him unless you’ve played Mega Man or watched the animated show where his character really took shape. Dr. Wily is essentially a jealous hack who is angered by the achievements of Dr. Light, who created Mega Man. Dr. Wily. In his rage, he reprogrammed many of the robots to become fighters with the final hope of… yes… world domination.

Gordon Freeman

Make a physicist and researcher an armed hero and you’ll end up up with some cool weapons. Gordon Freeman, the protagonist of the Half-Life series, wields everything from an energy field manipulator to a gluon gun. Freeman must fight an alien race known as the head-crabs after being one of the survivors of a massive attack. As a researcher, the game highlights that it has done very little of real effect, Freeman is saving the planet one headcrab at a time.

Trevor Phillips

Philips is a playable character in Grand Theft Auto V and certainly the most remembered. This is due, in part, to the stellar acting of Steve Ogg, who used motion detection controls to represent Philips’ cut scenes and voiced the character. While he’s certainly a bad guy at the game, Philips really does have a heart and you care about some people in your life. This certainly adds to his stature among those who play GTA—that and him being the main playable character in the online version of the game.

Commander

Master Chief is the iconic super soldier protagonist of the Halo series. He holds a special place in the hearts and minds of those who have grown up up with the shooting game franchise. His motivation and character are often compared to Spider-Man and Superman. He’s a protector and he’s as tough as anyone. That love can stem from players allowing themselves to be the boss and speak for them.

mega man

Mega Man, the bionic hero, is a bionic hero who jumps very high and fires energy pulses from his arm cannon. It was also a fixture on video game cartridge shelves in the past if you were a game fan. Mega Man can gain new abilities and attributes in each version of Mega Man, which has been numerous. Mega Man is a classic character and must be among the ten most famous characters in video games.

Many people mistakenly call it Link Zelda. However, Zelda is the name of the princess that Link tries to rescue in the various Legend of Zelda games. Link is the hero who fights with swords and shoots arrows in the games that the player controls. Link wields legendary swords as a Master Sword in the games and uses other legendary artifacts for his quests. What makes Link so iconic is, of course, the uniqueness of the video game series itself, as well as its status as the classic coming-of-age hero. He is pure in many ways and has no dialogue, save for some grunts and groans, in games. Still, players love Link, perhaps more than Zelda!

Lara Croft

With several movies starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, she’s filmed all the way up our list for number two. And it’s not hard to see what made it so popular among video games. They’re your… um… killer boots, of course! In all seriousness, she was one of the first female video game characters to shed some classic stereotypes. She is well educated and can kick ass with the best of them. And the developers have evolved her character over time to move away from the character’s obvious sex appeal to highlight the other attributes that make Lara Croft a fan favorite. Angelina Jolie played Lara Croft in several movies. She quickly rose to the top of our list at number 2. It’s easy to see why she’s so loved by video gamers. She was one of the original female video game characters to break some old stereotypes.

Donkey Kong

One of the first video game characters of all time, Donkey Kong has come a long way from those days of throwing wooden buckets down a series of slopes in “Jumpman”. He is also one of the few video game characters that started out as a villain of sorts and became a protagonist in later games. He won many hearts when he debuted in 3D in Donkey Kong Country and has since become one of Nintendo’s most iconic characters. Donkey Kong was one of the first video game characters to appear. He started by throwing wooden buckets on the slopes at Jumpman. He was a popular character in Donkey Kong Country and has been a beloved Nintendo character ever since.

Pikachu

If a Pokémon becomes the Pokémon that defines the franchise, it really is something special. Pikachu is the perfect example of this. Pikachu is so popular because he is Ash Ketchum’s partner and the starter Pokémon in the anime series. Pikachu is so adorable! Ryan Reynolds voices Pikachu in a movie about him. When an individual Pokémon defines the entire franchise, you know it’s truly something special. And Pikachu did just that! Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon in the video games. A big reason for the Pokémon’s popularity is that it is partnered with Ash Ketchum as the starter Pokémon in the anime series. Another likely reason is that Pikachu is so cute! And it doesn’t hurt when you have your own movie made about you (Pokemon Detective Pikachu), and you’re voiced by Ryan Reynolds.
