Privacy concerns are mounting with major internet giants reportedly following the mantra ‘data is the new oil’. While Facebook has become the poster boy for data collection and theft, several other Silicon Valley giants are also notorious for tracking user activity. Meanwhile, some browsers are trying to break the norm by taking a privacy-first approach. Two of them are Brave and Opera. The latest version of Opera comes with a built-in VPN service that is free for everyone. Sweet. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) connects your PC to another server and then uses that server to browse the internet. That means no one knows your location or who you are. Buy Opera Brave is a new player that has emerged in recent months. Brave is a blockchain-based browser that focuses on privacy by blocking all ads and scripts by default. 1. User interface and experience
Brave browser follows the tried and true formula with an address bar, bookmarks bar and tabs on the top and extensions on the right. Opera shakes things up up kind of with a sidebar that has some useful messaging shortcuts like WhatsApp, Telegram, Settings, My Flow (more on that later) and more. You can quickly configure that sidebar according to your needs.
I prefer to use Opera as it provides a number of shortcuts, tools and apps right in the browser. So after syncing Telegram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, I rarely lift my phone for replying to messages.
2. VPN
A VPN masks your IP address, which is one of the most common ways to determine your location. VPN does not block ads unless it has a feature offered by a VPN service provider. VPNs are used to:

Useful when connecting to a public Wi-Fi hotspot to protect data and browsing history, and prevent hacking and phishing attempts. Brave Browser recently partnered with two household names in the privacy and security world: Tor Project and DuckDuckGo. If you open a private window, you will see two options. The first option is DuckDuckGo, a privacy-focused search engine. But DuckDuckGo is more than that. It changes the way we search the web.
The second option is TOR, the popular ui browser that works by moving your internet data through multiple servers run by volunteers around the world. It uses multi-layer encryption where data is encrypted before sending it to the next server, making it impossible to track it back. The difference between TOR and VPN is the difference between anonymity and privacy. With a VPN, you trust Opera to do its job, which is to provide you with a secure tunnel to browse region-locked sites without revealing your personally identifiable details. 4. Brave Rewards Program
Backed by industry heavyweights like Peter Thiel (PayPal and Facebook), Brave browser has introduced a new concept. Brave blocks all ads and trackers by default, but you can choose to whitelist some of them. You can also choose to block scripts. However, doing that broke a lot of web pages while trying to browse the web. Now when you enable Brave Rewards, you will see ads as Windows notifications, not between the content. You can then choose to view and open this notification and interact with the ad. Users can choose to watch between 1 and 5 ads per hour.
Advertisers must participate in the Brave Rewards program and be verified to show ads. Putting it all together is BAT (Basic Attention Token), Brave’s native cryptocurrency, which will be split three ways. According to Brave, 70% goes to the users, 15% to publishers and the rest to the Brave team. Verified content creators are highlighted in the browser.
The BAT token you have earned for giving your ‘attention’ can be used in two ways. You can withdraw it through a crypto exchange or use it tip content creators on various platforms such as Twitter, YouTube and Twitch. Interesting right?
However, advertisements are still advertisements. Brave notes that these ads are privacy-friendly. This means that they do not collect any user data, the browsing activity remains on the device, ads are non-intrusive and you can opt out at any time. 5. Other Features from Opera
Opera also has cryptocurrency in mind. They have built a crypto wallet directly into the browser that supports some popular currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tron. Useful for tipping, but not recommended for holding large sums.
Another cool feature I love is My Flow. That’s your private notebook where you can store and sync links, images and text that will appear on all connected devices. You can access it from the sidebar. Just scan a QR code from the Opera app mobile to start.
There is an RSS feed, which I recommend if you want to keep up to date with news from your favorite sources. You can quickly create browser screen images with the camera icon too.
I think Opera’s sidebar is something every browser should provide. It’s super convenient and packed features which many users will find useful and appreciate.
Privacy or anonymity?
Opera offers many apps and shortcuts in the sidebar that will boost your productivity and workflow. VPN offers privacy, but that’s how far it goes. Brave browser is very fast thanks to its ability to block ads and trackers that collect data and also consume resources. The Brave Rewards program is a new step and a remarkable concept that aims to change the advertising industry. Will it work? Possibly, but I’m hopeful.
