Guide: Change Default Downloads Folder in MacBook
I’ve seen a lot of messy and unorganized download folders on Mac. A lot of. In any case, it is much easier for me to keep my downloaded files clean up and organized when I download to my desktop which I constantly look at and then to download to the download folder that I don’t pay attention to until it gets too cluttered to find anything. So if you’re the same, it’s good to know that you can change where Safari, Firefox, and Chrome automatically place their downloads. So let’s discuss today’s article how to change the default download folder on Mac! Fortunately, the process of changing the default download folder in the three major Mac browsers is quite similar.
Change the default download location in Safari
For Apple’s built-in Safari browser, the first step is to open the Safari app and then the Safari drop-down menu in the top left corner of your screen. Choose from the drop-down list Preferences. After the Preferences window opens, make sure you select the General tab selected, you can change the “File download location” switch to any location you want.As you can see, I set mine to “Desktop”, but you can choose an alternate location with that “Other” choice. Clicking “Other” takes you to the familiar macOS open / save dialog box, from which you can select any folder you want to use.If you’re feeling really fancy, you can instead change the toggle shown in my second screenshot above to “Ask for any download,” which means you can archive anything you download right where you want it, any time again. While this is a handy feature but it can get cumbersome to choose a download location for each download you do.
Change the default download location in Firefox
With the Firefox browser, you start in the same way as with Safari. That is, first launch the Firefox application and then click on the said menu (i.e. the Firefox drop-down menu) in the top left corner. Then select Preferences from the Firefox drop-down menuBelow the General tab, the option for this is front and center: it’s even labeled ‘Save files to’.Use that “Choose” button on the right, which allows you to switch your download location to another folder, or again the ‘Always ask me where to save files’ radio button above, Firefox will prompt you every time you start a download.
Change the default download location in Chrome
Google has made it just a little more difficult to change your default download folder in the Chrome browser, but the steps start the same way as the other two browsers. Launch the Chrome application first and then click on it Chrome menu at the top of your screen and select Preferences from the Chrome drop-down menu.Scroll down the “Settings” tab until you see “Show advanced settings” and click on it.When those advanced settings appear, you have to scroll a bit further to get to the “Download Location” option. You can use the “Modify” button there to switch yours from whatever it’s set up, or as with Safari and Firefox, there’s a choice to have the browser ask you where to put the file you’re downloading every time.As Steve Jobs used to say, “Oh yeah, there’s one more thing.” Mail also uses the Downloads folder to store attachments you save, so if you really want to be thorough, you can change that too. Click on the Mail drop-down menu at the top of Mail and select Preferences. Then, on the General tab, you can change the download location just like you can with the web browsers:So now that you have all your browsers (and Mail!) Set up to do exactly what you need, you can proceed knowing your Downloads folder will never get too cluttered and disorganized again. Getting things done is so much easier when you stay organized.
