Guide: Disable Quick Access in Windows 10 File Explorer: Guide

Windows 10 has introduced the Quick Access view in File Explorer. Whenever you open a file manager window, you will see a list of frequently used folders and recently opened files, and frequently used folders will be displayed under the Quick access item in the navigation pane. But you can turn all of that off if you don’t want to see it. Quick Access works much like the old “Favorites” list in previous versions of Windows, where you can pin your favorite folders for easy access. That’s useful, of course, but a lot of people don’t like the fact that the Quick Access list is automatically populated with folders they use often. Many also prefer not to see a list of frequently used folders and recent files every time they open File Explorer, or at least want File Explorer to open on “This PC” by default. If you belong to one of these groups, read on and we’ll show you how to take control of the Quick Access feature

Open This PC Windows instead of Quick Access

On Windows 10, the Windows Explorer view (This PC) from which you can directly access all drives has been replaced with something called Quick Access. In the Quick Access view, you get an overview of the last 8 frequently used folders and recent files that you have edited on the computer. For individual users, it’s a good attempt to streamline things, but it can be a privacy concern for shared systems. To make This PC the default view, click File Button Click File Explorer and navigate to Change Folder and Search Options. From here, simply change the Open File Explorer settings to This PC and save the settings. The next time you click the folder icon in the taskbar to open Windows Explorer, you will be taken to This PC instead of the Quick Access list.

Remove quick access completely

Now that we cover the privacy concerns, let’s see how to remove the frequently used folders and recently changed files from the list. In the Change folder and Search options settings, navigate to Privacy settings. Just toggle off the two options here, Show frequently used folders in Quick access and Show recently used files in Quick access. Also click on Delete button to delete the history so far and wipe the slate clean.
