Guide: Disabling Pocket for Firefox on PC and Mobile: Guide

Pocket’s deep integration with Firefox offers cool perks such as the ability to save and sync web content across devices for offline reading. It also serves as a fresh alternative to the traditional bookmarks features present in Firefox. However, the distraction caused by Pocket’s featured articles can put a dent in your productivity, not to mention the extra resources used up through this integrated extension. Fortunately, you can stop Pocket’s annoying distractions pretty easily, and turning it off completely doesn’t take too long either. If you’re distracted by Pocket’s recommended articles on it mobile version of Firefox, we will also talk about removing it. So let’s get started. Pocket on desktop

On the desktop, Firefox uses Pocket quite extensively, so we’ll take a look at how to disable each functionality one by one.

Pocket shows recommended articles from various websites based on your past browsing habits. To prevent these suggestions from appearing up, just tap the gear icon in a new tab and turn off Recommended by Pocket. Note: You can turn this around feature by checking the box again. Pocket’s featured articles aren’t affected by disabling Pocket integration – which we’ll talk about shortly – so you should always find this option available.

Disable Pocket from URL bar

Removing featured articles is one thing, but Pocket’s core functionality lies in the fact that it can save and sync certain web pages for offline viewing. There is a Pocket icon directly on the taskbar which can be annoying if you dislike the sight of add-ons in the Firefox user interface. To remove Pocket from the URL bar, right-click the icon and select Remove from address bar. Note: To get this functionality back, tap the Ellipsis icon in the URL bar, right-click Save Page to Pocket, then click Add to Address Bar.

Disable Pocket Integration

If you disable Recommended Articles or remove Pocket from the URL bar, it will be disabled completely. The extension is still humming in the background – using up resources – and you’ll even find a Show Pocket List option in your Firefox library. If you want to run Firefox without this integrated add-on, you must choose to remove the Pocket integration. However, due to its integrated nature, you will not find Pocket listed on the Firefox add-ons page. That includes tweaking the Firefox configurations, but it’s nothing serious and can be done quickly. Step 1: Type in a New Tab page about: config in the URL bar and press Enter. Then click on I accept the risk! button on the This may void your warranty! screen.

Step 2: Enter extensions.pocket.enabled in the search bar. Double click extensions.pocket.enabled from the search results to set its value to False.

That is it. You have completely disabled Pocket from Firefox. Note: If you want to enable Pocket integration at a later time, go through the steps above and set the value of extensions.pocket.enabled to True. Also read: How to Block Cryptocurrency Mining on Firefox

Bag it Mobile

On iOS and Android, you receive Pocket integration, but luckily it’s limited to only featured articles. Let’s take a look at how to disable them.

iOS

Step 1: Tap the Firefox menu icon and then tap Settings.

Step 2: Under General, tap New Tab.

Step 3: Tap the switch next to Recommended by Pocket to turn the option off.

Android

Step 1: Open the Firefox menu and tap Settings. Then tap on General.

Step 2: Tap Home, then tap Top Sites.

Step 3: On the Top Sites pop-up, tap the switch next to Recommended by Pocket to turn it off. Note: Go through the same steps to enable Pocket’s featured articles on both platforms. Also read: 6 reasons why you should give Firefox Quantum a shot

Enjoy Firefox without distractions

While I’ve found Pocket to come up with some nice suggestions at times, I really don’t like the extra distractions, especially when I want to get some work done. I also prefer my browser to run in top shape without any extensions – integrated or not – that might slow things down. Plus, Firefox really should have made Pocket an optional feature instead of pushing it down users’ throats. Come on Mozilla, I’d stick with Chrome if I wanted suggested articles to pop up up always! So, what do you think of a Pocketless Firefox experience? Let us know in comments.
