Guide: DroidCam vs EpocCam: Comparison and Review

The sudden trigger in the work of home shift has demanded accessories such as microphones, speakers, webcams, laptop standards, wireless headphones and more. Most are out of stock or cost 2x / 3x of the original price. The ones in stock have a delivery time of more than two weeks, which is not ideal for the end user. All hardware products allow you to replace the webcam and microphone with your smartphone using apps and services such as EpocCam, cam, DroidCam and iCam. EpocCam and DroidCam are two of the best apps for your phone in webcam on a PC or Mac. Both apps offer enough features in the free version to let you test things out before paying for premium features. You can also use these apps as the default cameras on video calling apps such as Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. In this post, we will compare the EpocCam and DroidCam and conclude which service is best for you to turn your smartphone into a webcam on Windows.

Cross-platform availability

EpocCam is available everywhere. Kinoni (the company behind EpocCam) offers its service on iOS, Android, Mac and Windows. You can also install the relevant EpocCam drivers to enable video calling apps. DroidCam is accessible on iOS, Android and Windows. If you plan to use DroidCam with Mac, you are out of luck. For comparison in this post, we will use an Android phone (Pixel XL) and a Windows laptop (HP Specter x360). And second, these apps need permission camera and microphone to function properly, so you need to grant those permissions for them to work properly.

Institution Up

These apps require seamless installation. After several failed attempts to set up, user may get discouraged from using these apps in future. EpocCam has the upper hand in this area. Let me explain why. First you need to download the EpocCam app on Android and Windows. Make sure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and open the app on it phone now go back to the Windows PC and open the EpocCam viewer app.

EpocCam will detect the connection and in no time it will feed the phone camera to Windows laptopThat is it. No ID or password required. Note: EpocCam will automatically install the EpocCam viewer app on your device when downloading the drivers for Windows. As for DroidCam, open the app on it phone first. DroidCam shows the Wi-Fi IP and DroidCam port number. Write them down.

Go back to your Windows device and open the DroidCam client. Add Device IP and DroidCam Port ID, select Video and Audio, and start the connection. You can also use a USB data cable to connect your phone to the PC / Windows laptop

User interface and Features

EpocCam provides a simple user interface for changing the camera, expand the video feed and use flash options during video calls. The app does not provide a settings menu. The default resolution is set to 640×480 at 30fps (free version). You can also switch between the front and the back camera (I recommend using the back of your smartphone camera

With EpocCam you can also use the phone microphone as the default microphone for your computer. It can be helpful if you have laptop microphone no longer works. Others features including 1080p Full HD video output (Pro mode, more on that later), manual focus on video, dualcamera support with telephoto camera of the latest iPhones, flashlight support and more. With DroidCam you can use the camera during the live feed. However, you can play with white balance, exposure and anti-banding during the live feed. Before you start streaming on DroidCam, you can tap the menu above and go to Settings. With the app you can use the camera (behind or in front) and allows you to control your phone as a microphone during video calls.

However, the Windows viewer app is packed with options. You can zoom in and out, rotate the device feed and change the focus of the video.

Integration of third-party apps

With the growing trend of Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Skype, you would want to use these apps as the default camera during meetings. With the EpocCam and DroidCam, you can use the service as the default video feed on these video calling apps. For Zoom, open the Windows app, go to Settings> Video> Camera, and set either EpocCam or DroidCam as the default cameraFor Microsoft Teams, open the app, go to Settings> Audio & video> Video and set up these apps.

DroidCam has a limitation. It does not work with the apps from the Windows Store or Metro apps. For example, the DroidCam app does not work with the Skype app from the Windows Store. The Skype app shows the EpocCam option, but DroidCam is not displayed. For that, you need to download the desktop app from the web.

price

EpocCam app is free to use. The free version is limited to 640×480 video resolution. It also comes with ads and watermarks. You can buy the paid version for $ 8 that takes the video output to Full HD, lets you use a flashlight, and removes ads. DroidCam is free for the most part, but if you want to get rid of ads and use extra features like rotate, autofocus, and flash, you can get the DroidCamX app for $ 4. It is a one-time purchase.

Use your Phone As a webcam

Both Droidcam and EpocCam are excellent apps for your phone in webcam on Windows. EpocCam offers more features, but at the same time it is behind the paywall. DroidCam offers the most features free, but again it won’t work on Mac. For now, I will stay with EpocCam. And you? Sound off in the comments below.
