Guide: Enable Dark Mode in Edge Chromium: Guide

Microsoft Edge’s shift to the Chromium rendering engine has made it a better browser in almost every aspect. It renders websites without a hitch, supports a huge library of extensions, and feels snappy and responsive. To make it even better, it also has a dark mode. Microsoft Edge Chromium dark mode goes beyond the dark theme present in the non-Chromium version of the browser. As long as websites feature built-in support for darker color scheme, it will display them in dark mode too. Let’s see how to activate and use this functionality.

Enable dark mode in Microsoft Edge Chromium

Whether you’re using Windows or macOS, Microsoft Edge Chromium’s dark mode functionality works the same on both platforms. As with Google Chrome, you can adapt the browser to the color scheme of the operating system – Edge will then be displayed up in dark mode when the system color mode in Windows or macOS is set to Dark. But that is not everything. There is also a special option to always enable dark mode for the browser itself. Step 1: Start by opening the Edge menu (click on the three dots in the top right corner of the browser window). Then click on Settings.

Step 2: Click Appearance in the navigation pane on the left.

Step 3: Click the drop-down menu next to Theme. Select Dark to immediately switch the browser to dark mode. If you want Microsoft Edge Chromium to match the color scheme in Windows and macOS, select System Default.

Note: For more details on how to To access and use the system color modes in Windows and macOS, scroll down to the next section. Once enabled, the full Microsoft Edge Chromium theme will be displayed in dark mode, with different shades of dark colors used to define browser elements. All sites that feature native support for darker color scheme automatically detects browser color preference and loads in dark mode. Microsoft Edge Chromium with dark mode enabled. However, most sites are not yet able to support the functionality, so for the most part you will only see the browser theme in dark mode. Fortunately, Microsoft Edge Chromium comes with an experimental feature which can cause the browser to forcibly display sites in dark mode. We will discuss this below.

System colors in Windows 10 and macOS

If you chose the System Default option in Microsoft Edge Chromium, the browser will automatically switch to dark mode when the dark system color scheme is selected in Windows and macOS. That’s perfect if you prefer a consistent experience across the operating system and supported applications.

Windows 10

Right-click on the desktop and select Personalize. On the settings app displayed up, click Colors, then use the menu under Choose your color to switch between the light and dark color modes for the operating system and supported apps.

In addition, you can select the Custom option to individually manage colors for the operating system and supported apps.

macOS Mojave and Catalina

Go to System Preferences (Apple menu> System Preferences) and click General. Use the Appearance controls (Light, Dark, and Auto) at the top of the screen to switch color schemes.

Select Dark to activate dark mode for the entire operating system and supported apps, or select Auto to automatically turn on and off the dark color scheme at night and during the day, respectively.

Force render all sites in dark mode

Microsoft Edge Chromium has an experimental feature which allows you to forcibly display all sites in dark mode. It works fine, but you will run into weird inversion issues from time to time. If you don’t mind, here’s it how to switch it feature Tip The following experimental feature is also present in other Chromium based browsers such as Google Chrome. Step 1: Type edge: // flags / # enable-force-dark in the address bar of a new tab in Microsoft Edge and press Enter.

Step 2: Click the drop-down menu next to Force dark mode for web content and select Enabled.

Step 3: Click Restart to restart the browser.

Microsoft Edge Chromium should forcibly display all sites in dark mode from now on. The experimental feature works outside of the color controls present in the browser’s settings panel – meaning you can view sites in dark mode even if you’re using the normal browser theme. Here Microsoft Edge Chromium forcibly renders a site in dark mode. If you use the feature, go through the above steps again. However, you should select Default while using the menu next to Force dark mode for web content.

Don’t fall off the edge

Dark mode is the perfect way to surf the web without dazzling your eyes, especially late at night. While Microsoft Edge Chromium’s dark mode isn’t universal, remember that you can force dark mode pretty much anywhere using the experimental browser flag. The next up Microsoft Edge Chromium is an excellent web browser. But how does it work against Firefox? Let’s find out.
