Guide: Enable/Disable Fullscreen Optimization in Windows 10: Guide

Do you like to play games on your Windows 10? Do you hate to experience a lag in the game just when you are about to kill? Some of my friends are complaining about how the new borderless display mode, enabled by default in Windows 10, is causing the slowdowns. Microsoft designed the new Borderless Display Mode to allow users to quickly switch tabs, improve performance and easily use Focus Assist while playing their favourite games. It replaces the old exclusive full-screen mode. Rather than improving game performance, it causes FPS lag for many users. Irony? A setting called Full Screen Optimizations controls this new mode. When enabled, you will find that your games will open in a hybrid view, where they will run in a borderless full-screen mode. And it’s not just limited to games; I’ve experienced it with several Windows apps. Let’s take a look at how to turn it off.

1. Turn off App-Wise Optimization full screen

This method is more suitable for turning off a game’s full-screen optimisation. I recommend it to Windows 10 users who experience lag while playing FPS games like CS: GO and PUBG. Depending on the make and model of your computer and the game settings, disabling the said option can give you a hassle-free experience. Start the File Explorer by clicking My Computer on your desktop or press the keyboard shortcut CTRL + E. You can now find the folder where the game is installed. It is always located in the C drive, but you may have chosen a different folder during installation. Look for the . EXE file of the game that is launching it.

I am doing this for Tencent’s PUBG as it is lagging and not opening properly for me. Right-click on the startup file and select Properties. You can also use the keyboard shortcut ALT + ENTER to up the properties of the file. Click the Compatibility tab and click the Disable full screen optimizations check box. Click Apply and OK when done.

If you are using Windows 10 with more than one user account and you want to change the settings for full screen optimization for all users, under the Compatibility tab, click Change settings for all users first.

Now select the option Turn off full screen optimizations and save all settings.

You can do this for any game that lags and causes problems in full screen mode. Note that the delay is more pronounced and reported more frequently for apps not downloaded and installed from the official Windows 10 store. Now open the game and check if you are still dealing with lags and if the window opens in an exclusive full screen mode or not.

2. Registry editor for all apps

Changing individual full screen optimization settings for each game can be time consuming and cumbersome. If you want to do this for all games installed on your system, Registry Editor is your best option. Tap the Windows button on your keyboard and search for regedit. Click on the Registry Editor option to launch the app.

You have to search for the GameConfigStore string which you can easily find by zooming in the following folder structure. ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSystemGameConfigStore Once there, you are looking for a DWORD entry called GameDVR_FSEBehaviorMode.

Here the default value is ‘0’, which means full screen optimization is enabled. To disable it, you need to right-click on the item and click on Modify.

In the pop-up window, change the value data from ‘0’ to ‘2’ and click OK when done. That should apply to your system-wide full-screen optimization settings so you don’t have to manually do this for every game.

3. Turn off Game bar and Captures

Here’s a bonus tip for gamers who are tired of the constant stuttering while playing Overwatch or other powerful games. Launch Windows Settings by pressing the Windows + I shortcut or by using the search bar. Click on Gaming here.

Below Game bar, you need to turn off Game clips, record screenshots and broadcast with Game bar option.

While you’re at it, you should also turn off background recording if you don’t want to record and share your gaming skills with others. You should only enable it if you need to record videos or take screenshots. Why waste precious resources features we don’t need or want? Click on Captures and under Background recording, uncheck the option to ‘Record in the background while playing a game’ if it is not already turned off.

Let the game begin

Although Microsoft has acknowledged the bugs and made some changes to the game settings in the October update, some users are still facing this issue. Disabling these settings is also a good idea if you are playing games on a machine with low specifications. Enabling the setting may work for the programs available through the Windows Store. However, many use the ones they download elsewhere. And forcing the full-screen optimization will only make those programs work strangely. So it totally is up for you – whether you want to enable the setting for each app or leave it disabled. The next up: Do games take up a lot of space on your Windows 10?
