Guide: Fix ‘100% Disk Usage Error in Windows 10’ Issue

You know why you’re here, don’t you? You have a lagging Windows 10 PC that refuses to work as intended. The Task Manager shows a disk usage of 100 percent. It looks like your hard drive is working overtime, but you’re not sure why. Here are some simple steps to fix 100% disk usage error which will help you work faster up your PC and make it usable again.

Windows Search is designed to quickly find files on the hard drive. Windows constantly indexes all files that can affect the performance of your PC. You can turn it off, but that just means it will take longer to search for files.

Start the RUN (Windows + R) command to open the command prompt by typing CMD.

You see a black window opening. Type the following command and press Enter. net.exe stop “Windows search”

Check if you can still see the 100% disk usage error. If not, you will need to disable Windows Search permanently. To do this, restart the RUN command and open the services.msc file.

Find Windows Search here, right-click on it and select Properties.

Click Startup Type and change the status from Automatic to Disabled. Click Apply.

You can replace Stop with Start in the above command to reverse the effect.

2. Turn off Superfetch

Superfetch helps your Windows PC boot faster, Microsoft claims, because my PC never starts up fast enough. If you are in sleep or hibernation mode and do not need to boot up Try to disable Superfetch all too often. Restart the command prompt by typing the CMD command in RUN (Windows + R). Once opened, type this command. net.exe quit superfetch

Check if Task Manager still shows 100% disk usage error.

3. Use CheckDisk Command

Restart the command prompt by typing CMD in the RUN command and pressing Enter. Once it opens, type the following command. chkdsk.exe / f / r You will be asked to confirm your actions. To do this, just type ‘y’ without quotes and hit Enter.

The system will perform a disk check only when you restart your computer. So save all your work and restart the computer.

4. Reset virtual memory

Virtual memory is not only made up of RAM, it is also part of your system’s hard drive. When Windows finds low RAM to perform actions, it borrows some of your hard drive’s memory to do the job. Maybe there is a virtual memory leak? If it does then resetting it should fix the problem. Press the Windows button and search for advanced system settings. Under the Advanced tab, find Performance and click Settings there.

Go to the Advanced tab again and click Change under the Virtual memory heading.

Deselect the Automatically manage paging file size option for all drives if it is not already checked. In the same window, select the primary drive where your operating system is installed (usually drive C) and select Custom format. The original size should be set to the recommended value you can see just below. The maximum size should be set to 1.5 times the size of your RAM. If your PC has 4 GB RAM (1 GB = 1024 MB), do not set it to more than 6144 MB.

Click Set and then OK everywhere to save and check if you can still see 100% disk usage error in Task Manager.

5. Turn off Windows Defender or Antivirus

All versions of Windows come with a built-in antivirus called Windows Defender. Most people like to install a third party antivirus product such as Kaspersky or Norton or AVG. While it is necessary, these antivirus programs can use more resources than necessary. Temporarily disable them to see if the problem persists.

Most antivirus programs let you disable them with a simple right-click option in the system tray, including Windows Defender.

6. Clear cache and temporary files

Many people use third party software such as CCleaner to clean their system of cache, temporary files and other temporary data, but given recent events, we would advise against doing this. Instead, you can manually clear cache and temporary files. Type temp in Run Command to open the correct folder.

Press CTRL + A to select and delete all files here. Nothing to worry about. Windows will regenerate them when it needs them.

Check the performance of your system again.

7. Skype

Yes, users have been complaining for years that Skype is a resource hog, and things haven’t improved with Windows 10. Make sure to quit Skype before continuing. You can stop Skype from the system tray or Task Manager itself. You can also use it to open the file location or navigate to it manually by opening the folder where you installed it.

Right-click on the Skype.exe file and select Properties or use the ALT + Enter shortcut.

On the Security tab, click Edit to change the permissions.

Select ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES and enable the Write option under the Allow column. Click Apply and OK to save. Time to recheck disk usage.

8. Google Chrome Prefetch Setting

Google Chrome is another program known to be a resource hog. Often times you will see it at the top of your Task Manager list when you sort it by Memory. Open a new tab in Chrome and click the three-dot menu and click Settings.

Click on the advanced option after scrolling to the bottom of the page.

Under Privacy and security, turn off Use a prediction service to load pages faster.

9. Shut down Windows Tips

Windows 10 comes with many options and settings. That can be overwhelming for new users. For your convenience, Windows offers tips and tricksIf you don’t need them, you can turn them off. Press Windows + I to launch Settings or search for it using Windows buttonClick on Settings.

Disable Get under Notifications & Actions tips tricks, and suggestions while using the Windows option.
