Guide: Fix ‘Apple Music Not Playing Downloaded Songs’ Issue

Music downloads are there for a reason. Not only can you play your songs whenever you want, but they also help save precious mobile bandwidth. And for those reasons, it is crazy when your downloaded songs no longer work. With Apple Music, that seems to be a common problem. Don’t get me wrong – I love Apple Music. But recently, Apple Music refused to play my downloads on my Android smartphone for the umpteenth time. And that also while travelling. Checking further, I also found that this was an issue in iOS, although not that often. Fortunately, it’s usually nothing serious, and there are multiple fixes in the tank to go through and get your downloaded music playing again. Let’s start with the Android version of Apple Music and then see what you can do to ease the problem on iOS. Tip Before proceeding, consider force quitting and restarting Apple Music on your Android or iOS device if you haven’t already. Usually, relaunching an app is a surprisingly viable way to fix common bugs and glitches. You should also try to reboot your device.

Apple Music – Android

Downloaded Apple Music songs refusing to play on Android is a problem that can surface at the strangest moments. Let’s start with what worked (or worked) for me when troubleshooting this problem, then move on to other possible solutions.

1. Enable mobile data / connect to WiFi

I know – you download songs to listen offline or to make them not always use mobile data. However, Apple Music tends to stop playing your downloads after being disconnected from Apple servers for a while – usually after a few days. And of course establishing a connection to the servers solves the problem for good. Just turn on mobile data and then tap a downloaded track. The track will likely start playing after a few seconds.

You can now turn off mobile data and Apple Music should keep playing the songs without any problems. Turning on mobile data doesn’t work trick, especially if connectivity is poor. In that case, try connecting to a nearby Wi-Fi hotspot. Simply turn off WiFi once Apple Music starts playing your songs. If you don’t have access to Wi-Fi and you have also turned off Apple Music to make full use of your mobile data, then the following steps should help you fix that. Step 1: Tap the vertical Ellipsis icon in the top right corner of the screen, then tap Settings.

Step 2: Tap Mobile data and turn on the switch next to Use mobile data. You can keep the toggles turned off next to Streaming and Downloads as you only need to connect to the Apple servers for a short time.

However, Apple Music will still use your mobile data to download album art and other miscellaneous items. So, you may want to disable it entirely after fixing the problem. This trick (a rather silly one) saved me a lot of frustration, and I’m sure it will work for you too. But if not, let’s see what else you can do.

2. Clear cache

If you regularly stream and download songs, an outdated Apple Music cache can cause conflicts and cause the app to malfunction. So let’s try to clear it up. The exact procedure varies by Android device, but you should understand the gist by following the steps below. Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Android smartphone. Next, tap on Apps & notifications then tap on Apps.

Step 2: Tap Apple Music then tap Storage.

Step 3: Tap Clear Cache to delete Apple Music cache.

Launch Apple Music and then try to play your downloads. Are they playing? If not, what is on the cards?

3. Download the entire album

Yep, that sounds a bit crazy. But is the problem limited to just one album? The Android version of Apple Music usually cannot identify whether a playlist or album contains only selected items on the list that are available offline.

Start downloading another song in the playlist or album. If that doesn’t help, consider downloading the entire album.

4. Update the app

Have you updated the Apple Music app? Newer versions contain various bug fixes and performance improvements that can likely resolve persistent issues. If you haven’t turned off automatic updates for your device, consider manually updating Apple Music to the latest version.

To do that, search for Apple Music in the Google Play Store and go to the product page. If an update is available, tap Update. In my case, I have already updated the app so it shows as Open.

Apple Music – iOS

Apple Music is much more stable on the iPhone and iPad than Android. However, you will still likely run into the strange case where downloaded songs may not play. The following fixes should help you play your downloads again soon.

1. Connect to the Internet / Turn on mobile data

As with the Android version of Apple Music, it helps to connect online via WiFi or mobile data shortly. Once your songs start playing, you can disconnect from the Internet.

If Apple Music is limited to using mobile data, the following steps should fix that. Step 1: Tap Music in the iOS Settings app, then tap Cellular Data.

Step 2: Turn on the switch next to Mobile data.

You can keep the switches next to Streaming and Downloads turned off. Once Apple Music is back to normal, turn mobile data off to save bandwidth.

2. Download the app

Haven’t connected to online work? Then it’s time to uninstall and reinstall Apple Music to rule out corruption issues. But hey … won’t that delete your downloads? In fact no. Rather than removing the app altogether, I recommend uninstalling it. That way you will still have your downloaded music after reinstallation. Perfect! Step 1: Tap General in Settings app, then tap iPhone / iPad Storage.

Step 2: On the list of apps displayed up, tap Music.

Step 3: Tap Download app, then tap Download app again when prompted for confirmation.

Step 4: Restart your iPhone or iPad, search for Apple Music in the App Store and download it again.

Can you play your downloads now? If not, scroll down to see what to do next.

3. Update iOS

Apple Music is part of iOS. That means you cannot simply update the app from the App Store to get the latest patches and performance enhancements. If it has been a while since you updated iOS, consider doing so now. Step 1: Tap General in the Settings app, then tap Software Update.

Step 2: If updates are available, tap Download and install.

Give Apple Music a spin after updating iOS. If your downloaded songs still don’t play, the following solution likely will.

4. Reset all settings

I should have said this tip much earlier, but the simple fact that I forgot your Wi-Fi networks and other manually configured settings on your entire device meant I had to push it down the list. But since you’ve already gone through several other solutions, it’s time to reset all settings on your device. Warning: Resetting all settings on your device will delete all configured settings and remembered Wi-Fi networks from your device. You will have to spend significant time reconfiguring those settings later. Step 1: Tap General and then tap Reset.

Step 2: Tap Reset all settings and tap Reset again to confirm.

Resetting your device settings will fix incorrect configurations that may cause Apple Music to stop functioning normally. Play a downloaded track afterwards, and you probably shouldn’t have any issues.

Relax, tune in

Apple music not playing songs is a very annoying and frustrating problem. But at the very least, it’s easy to fix. Finally you can close your eyes and chill to the music. Either way, consider messaging Apple and let them know about the problem. The more people complain, the sooner we may have a permanent solution to this problem.
