Fix ‘Can’t Establish Secure Connection in Safari’ Issue – Guide

Apple designed Safari to keep you safe while browsing the Internet on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. There are numerous security guards features embedded in the app, but the most notable is that Safari will not load a web page if it is not secure. Typically, Safari’s refusal to load websites reminds us to be careful who we trust online. But Safari sometimes claims that it cannot establish a secure connection with the most trusted sites on the web. What you should do in this case is the following.

1. Check the appropriate certificate

For simplicity, make sure you are accessing the correct website by clicking on the address bar. You should look at the URLs and look for the green lock icon in front of the website address. If it appears in gray, it is probably a smart phishing site with the exact logo and layout of your bank or other site that you visit frequently.

2. Clear your browser history

Safari’s option to clear your browser history is like a double-edged sword. Normally, the Clear Browser History option would remove the list of websites you have visited. However, the latest iteration of Safari removes related data, such as cookies and content from the respective websites. So, be cautious.

3. Uninstall suspicious extensions and plug-ins

Extensions, plug-ins and add-ons are like little helpers that speed up up the process of performing specific tasks with one or two clicks. However, installing many of them affects Safari’s performance. Therefore, it is advisable to remove unwanted and unused plug-ins or extensions.

4. Unblock all cookies

It may be an honest mistake for you to accidentally click on the box that appears just below the one that says – Prevent cross-site tracking. If so, that box is essentially blocking all cookies.

5. Check permissions

In addition to overdoing the plug-ins, some of them force content blocking for sites that are known to contain unsolicited pop-ups and deceptive ads with some code. If you believe that Safari is getting a false positive, it is best to check the permissions for content blockers and other elements, such as location.

6. Flush DNS Cache

Sometimes clearing your DNS cache helps fix many problems related to your website’s connection and speed. This solution is quite simple, as long as you write the command accurately. Make sure that Safari is not running, and if it is, you can end it. Start the Terminal application on your Mac and send the following command: sudo killall -HUP mDNSReply You will have to enter the administrator password and then press the Enter key. Now restart Safari to see if this helped.

7. Firewall settings

A firewall protects you from harmful requests to steal your data and resources. It is possible for some software to enforce strict Firewall policies and prevent Safari from any Internet connection. Well, it happens when parents or the office environment don’t want you to surf the web. There is a safe way to check if the Firewall is blocking Safari. Also, make sure that Safari appears in the list of exceptions and that Allow incoming connections is enabled for it. If Safari does not appear there, proceed to the next solution.

8. Synchronize the system time

Although it seems unlikely that the system time on your Mac is wrong, it is best to check it once. See How to check and change the system time. Click the Apple menu and select System Preferences. From the window that appears up, click Date and Time. Then click on the time zone to verify that you have selected the correct one. If you want to make any changes, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your macOS account password.

9. Remove all data from the site

Apple removed Reset Safari button since the Yosemite update. Fortunately, there are two easy ways to get a stock Safari experience. Running this solution, along with the first one, should be good enough to set Safari to the factory state. You can exit Safari and restart it to try to access the website that is causing so much suffering.
