Guide: Fix ‘Chrome Dark Mode Not Working’ Issue in Windows 10 PC

A native Chrome dark mode was a demand feature for a very long time. And with version 74, everyone finally had to have it. However, it is not a full-fledged dark mode yet, but it affects the Chrome theme. A bit of a downer, but a step in the right direction. However, dark mode is tied to the standard Windows color scheme. Google is also rolling it out in stages. So you will have to wait for it and you will not see it even after updating Chrome to the latest version. That said, the directions below should guide you to successfully enable dark mode in Chrome. So let’s check them out. Note: Dark mode is only available in Chrome version 74 and above. To update to the latest version of Chrome, open the Chrome menu, point to Help, then click About Google Chrome.

Switch to dark app mode

Chrome’s dark mode is tied to the default color theme or ‘app mode’ in Windows. Chrome won’t show up in dark mode if you’re using the default Light app mode. Hence, you must switch to dark app mode to display Chrome in dark mode. The following steps should help you with that. Step 1: Type ‘color settings’ into the Start menu and click Open.

Step 2: Under Choose your default app mode, click the radio button in addition to Dark.

Google Chrome should immediately show up in dark mode if the feature is fully deployed to your desktop. Remember that most native Windows apps, such as File Explorer and Photos, also show up in dark mode due to the change you just made. But if switching to Dark app mode didn’t affect Chrome, or if it was already enabled on your desktop, let’s see what you can do about it right now. Tip You can also use the following pointer to display Chrome up always in dark mode without switching to dark app mode. Very useful if you don’t want other apps to be displayed up also in dark mode.

Force dark mode

If changing the default app mode in Windows the trick, don’t be disappointed. It does not mean that you have not received dark mode feature however, it is still present in Chrome and you just have to wait for Google to pull the lever, whenever that may be. Or you can just force it to show upAnd that’s what you can do if you want it right away. Step 1: Right-click on the Chrome shortcut on your desktop and select Properties. Note: If you don’t have a Chrome shortcut, open the Start menu, type ‘chrome’, right-click on the Chrome search result, then click Open file location. In the Explorer window that appears up, right-click Google Chrome, point to Send to, and select Desktop (create shortcut). Step 2: Select the Shortcut tab and add the following command at the end of the target field. –Force-dark mode Make sure to keep a single distance between the command line and the end of the target path, as shown in the screenshot below.

Once done, click Apply, click OK and launch Chrome. And voila! You will see the browser displayed in dark mode. Don’t forget to delete that command when a new update hits Chrome to check if dark mode works without it.

Disable existing themes

Even after Chrome’s dark mode works, it may appear uneven within the theme. These graphical anomalies usually occur because of Chrome themes you may have previously installed. You need to revert to the default Chrome theme to fix the problem. Step 1: Open the Chrome menu, then select Settings to access the Chrome settings panel.

Step 2: Under the Appearance section, click Restore Default Settings next to Themes.

Quit and restart Chrome. The browser should then display properly in dark mode.

Not a pretty dark mode, but …

Chrome’s dark mode is well designed, although it currently appears as a dark theme. You will find it applied to just about every Chrome UI element, such as the Settings panel, context menus, address bar, etc. And it looks nothing short of fantastic.

But one drawback is that switching to incognito mode can cause confusion, similar to normal mode! So you have to rely on the incognito or profile icon in the top right corner of the user interface to determine which mode you are in. Either way, it’s finally great to have a special dark theme that won’t end up blind your eyes. And plenty of extensions do a great job of emulating dark mode on web pages. So until Google finally gets the job done in a completely dark mode, this should do the trick. The next up Are you using an iPhone or an iPad to access the Internet?
