Guide: Fix ‘Chrome Password Manager Not Working’ Issue

Google released the Chrome 69 version on the browser’s 10th anniversary and it included a redesigned Chrome password manager. It’s a simple built-in password manager to generate, remember and auto-fill login details of your frequently visited sites. While the password manager option should be ‘on’ by default in the settings, some users have encountered issues nonetheless. Some even reported that the Chrome Password Manager does not automatically generate passwords, while others say that the autofill does not work. Select a report that the password manager does not appear up and ask if a site’s login credentials should be saved. Chrome’s password manager was never trouble-free, and removing Chrome isn’t the best alternative. We want to help. Here are the six tested ways to fix when Chrome Password Manager is not working for you. Let’s start.

1. Enable / Re-enable Password Keeper

Duh! I know what you’re thinking, but a user recently discovered that this is the most obvious solution that we often overlook. Launch Chrome on your PC and click on your profile picture. Choose the Passwords option from the drop-down menu. You may need to re-enter your Google account password.

Once inside, make sure Auto Sign-in and Offer to save passwords are both turned on and not greyed out.

Check if you are now prompted to generate a secure password and that your login details are automatically filled in when you visit the login page of that site.

If it feature is already enabled in your browser and you are still having issues, you can try disabling it and then re-enabling it. This trick is known to work at times.

2. See an example of it

Sometimes when you visit the login page of a particular site, Chrome Password Manager may not fill in the login information automatically. A common reason for this is that the browser cannot detect the necessary fields. In this situation it is better to only fill in the login details using the Preview featureClick on your profile picture and select Passwords. Scroll down to find the site for which you need the credentials. You see an example ‘eye’ button next to the password. Once you click on it, you will be asked to enter the login password of your Windows computer. That is a certainty feature

If you enter the password of your device, you can see the login password of the specific site. Copy it, paste it into the site login boxes and login. Although the autocomplete didn’t work, you still don’t have to remember login details. Just fill in manually.

3. Log out and back in

It’s an old one trick but can sometimes work wonders. Doing so can help you and others with sync issues. Launch the Chrome browser, click on your profile picture and select Exit username.

Keep in mind that all Chrome windows will be closed, so make sure to save all your work before proceeding. Restart the Chrome browser and sign into your Google account to restart the standard sync process.

4. Delete cookies

Browser data such as cache and cookies can sometimes cause great damage. What is a cookie? It’s not the edible! Think of them as small packages of information that websites use to track session and profile details. They are also used and often abused by some sites to track users’ movements around the internet and to violate their privacy, but that’s a topic for another day. It is possible that some old packets of information (cookies) in your browser cause Chrome to behave strangely, making it think that you are already logged in or logged out. The best way to fix that is to delete all cookies. To clear cookies, click the menu icon and select Settings.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the Advanced option.

Click Clear browsing data to display a pop-upupGo to the Advanced tab here.

Make sure you only select Cookies, Cache and Download History. Do not delete your browsing history, passwords or autocomplete data. You will lose all the data you have saved while logging in to different sites.

After selecting the relevant options, click Clear data. Keep in mind that when clearing cookies, Chrome will log you out of all sites. So make sure you have saved all the work.

5. Report to Google

While password manager has always been part of the Chrome browser, Google has revamped it quite a bit to add new ones features and remove most of the kinks. However, if you are facing an issue that you have not been able to resolve yourself, it is a good idea to report it to Google.

Visit the home page of the Chrome help forum. Here you will find other Chrome users who report problems, offer solutions, and help each other. Also, Google support representatives will respond proactively to critical questions. Before creating a new topic, search to make sure it has already been reported. If not, then go ahead to post about the problem you are facing with relevant details.

6. Remove and reinstall the Chrome browser

Count this as the last resort when nothing else works to fix your problem. Because all your data, such as browsing history, passwords and everything in between, is linked to your Google profile and therefore safe. I usually recommend a fresh download and a clean install.

Delete Chrome from your Windows PC or a Mac, then download the latest version of Chrome and reinstall Chrome. Launch Chrome and sign into your Google account to sync all your data. Check if Chrome Password Manager is working properly. Google has released the Chrome version 70 update, which means you may be using an older version. Upgrade your Chrome browser to potentially fix the issues.

Managing passwords

Chrome Password Manager is a good product and Google has improved it with the latest Chrome versions. It is easy to use and works on all devices and platforms that support the Chrome browser. It is also a new offering, and as with all new services, it may have some bugs that need to be fixed. I’m sure Google is working hard to make it better. In the meantime, you can try some of the above solutions to make sure you have a smooth experience. The next up: Not happy with the Chrome password manager?
