Guide: Fix ‘GIMP Not Showing New Fonts’ Issue in Windows 10

When you add fonts on a Windows PC, they are technically immediately available in all supported programs such as Microsoft Word, Paint, Photoshop and even GIMP. But sometimes while the fonts are displayed up in some apps they are missing in others. That’s what happens in GIMP for some users. So we will tell you how to fix GIMP not recognizing new fonts. GIMP is a free and open-source alternative to Photoshop. While we know the possibilities regarding image manipulation, such as changing the image background, removing the background, and even making the background transparent, it also amazes us when it comes to text. But for that we need beautiful fonts. And if they are not loaded, problems will arise. Let’s get right into the ways to show new fonts in GIMP

How to Install fonts in GIMP

You don’t have to install fonts separately in GIMP. By default, any font you install on your Windows PC will become available in GIMP. To install fonts, you can drag and drop the font files (after the ZIP file has been extracted) to the C: WindowsFonts folder. You can also right-click the font file in a folder and select Install or Install for all users. Check out our detailed guide On how to install fonts in GIMP.

Now that you know the correct method for installing fonts, let’s see why the new fonts are not showing.

1. Rescan fonts

Once you have new fonts installed on your PC, you should always use the original Rescan fonts feature in GIMP to show the new fonts. To do that, launch GIMP and click on the Fonts tab on the right. You will see a green refresh icon. Click on it to rescan the fonts.

If the Fonts tab is not present, click the Configure icon for this tab.

Select the Add tab followed by Fonts.

Tip You can also add the Fonts tab from the Windows menu> Dockable dialog boxes> Fonts.

2. Restart GIMP

If GIMP does not load the new fonts by rescanning, restart GIMP. To do this, close the app and then open it again. Pro Tip: You should also try the magical trick of restarting your PC.

3. Supported fonts

GIMP is based on the FreeType 2 font engine, which supports many font formats. These include: Any font that FreeType 2 can handle will be added to GIMP as soon as you install it on your Windows PC. You will need to manually add the rest of the fonts in the GIMP Fonts folder if they are not loading as shown below.

4. Check Font Folders in GIMP

GIMP must have at least two folder paths added in the settings by default. One is the Windows font folder and the second is the GIMP font folder. If one is missing, especially the Windows folder, the fonts will not work properly in GIMP. So you need to check the font folders and add a folder if it is missing. To do this, follow these steps: Step 1: Launch GIMP and click Edit at the top. Select Preferences from it.

Step 2: On the left side of the Preferences window, click the plus icon next to the Folders option to expand it.

Step 3: Scroll down and click Fonts. Then you will see the different folder paths on the right. Make sure the path to the Windows Fonts folder – C: UsersUSERNAMEAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsFonts or C: WindowsFonts – is added. Also check the GIMP folder C: Program FilesGIMP 2sharegimp2.0fonts.

Step 4: If the file location where your fonts are installed is missing in the above step, please add it. To do this, click on the add folder icon. Then click on the path selection icon. Navigate to the path to the font folder. Then click Ok.

5. Add fonts manually in GIMP

To do this, navigate to the path C: Program FilesGIMP 2sharegimp2.0fonts on your PC. Copy the extracted font file (TTF) to this folder. Then rescan the fonts as shown above or restart GIMP.

6. Update GIMP

As with all tools, even GIMP is prone to bugs. Sometimes the problem is in the current version of GIMP and that’s why you don’t see the new fonts. To fix the problem, check if an update is available for GIMP. If so, install it.

7. Remove GIMP

If nothing works, you should try reinstalling GIMP. To do this, first remove GIMP from your PC. Restart your PC. Then install it again.

Bonus Tip: Preview fonts quickly

When you need to choose a font for your text in GIMP, it is a time consuming task to select the text every time. Fortunately, GIMP allows you to quickly preview fonts without repeating all the steps. To do this, select the text in GIMP. Then click the Fonts tab on the right. Click on one font and then use the arrow keys to scroll through the other. The new font will immediately reflect on your text.

Customize text

Hopefully, your favorite fonts are back in GIMP by following the methods above. Once it does, you can edit your text in a variety of ways to create stunning images. For example, you can create a cool see-through text effect image in GIMP. You can even add shadows to your text for greater effect.
