Guide: Fix ‘Windows 10 Not Receiving Files via Bluetooth’ Issue

Windows 10 includes many built-in tools that allow users to receive files from other devices wirelessly. Bluetooth is a great example. It’s not the fastest file transfer protocol on a Windows computer, but it gets the job done. And you can also connect Bluetooth speakers and headphones. However, there are times when Bluetooth does not work on Windows 10. Some Windows users have reported instances where they were unable to receive files from other Bluetooth devices. Should you ever encounter such a problem, please refer to the solutions below.

1. Re-enable Bluetooth

Turn off your computer’s Bluetooth and turn it on again. That can help resolve connection failures / conflicts that prevent your Windows 10 computer from receiving files. You can turn off Bluetooth from the Windows Action Center or go to Settings> Devices and turn Bluetooth off and on again.

2. Reconnect both devices

To receive files on your Windows 10 computer via Bluetooth, make sure the device sending the file is paired / connected to your PC. If you still cannot receive files, you can remove the device from your PC and reconnect it. Navigate to Settings> Devices and tap the device you want to receive files from. Then tap Delete button

You will get a prompt asking you to confirm that you want to remove the device from your computer. Tap Yes to continue. This will remove the device from your PC’s list of connected Bluetooth devices. Now reconnect the device to your PC and check if the problem is resolved. Follow the steps below to pair a device with your Windows 10 computer via Bluetooth. Step 1: Open the Windows Settings menu and tap Devices.

Step 2: Turn on Bluetooth.

That will turn on your PC’s Bluetooth and make it discoverable to other devices. On the device (smartphone or other PC), search for available Bluetooth devices and select the name of your PC. This will bring up a prompt in the lower right corner of your computer to inform you that a new device wants to pair with your PC. Step 3: Tap the prompt to continue.

Step 4: Verify the pairing process by confirming that the PIN displayed on your PC screen matches the connecting device.

Step 5: Tap Close to complete the pairing process.

If Windows still does not receive files after doing the above, check if you are sending the files to your computer correctly.

3. Use Bluetooth file transfer

You cannot send files to a Windows 10 computer via Bluetooth without the PC first establishing a file transfer connection. In addition, the device from which you are sending the file must have previously been linked to your PC (see method 2 above). Let’s show you how to received a file correctly on a Windows 10 computer via Bluetooth. Step 1: Press up-directed arrow icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar.

Step 2: Right click on the Bluetooth icon. If you don’t find the Bluetooth icon in the ‘Show hidden icons’ menu, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your PC.

Step 3: Then select ‘Receive a file’.

That will open the Bluetooth file transfer window.

Your computer will start receiving files in the same window as soon as a paired Bluetooth device starts sending / sending data.

4. Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter

If your Windows 10 computer is still not receiving files, the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter can help you identify and fix the problem. Step 1: Launch the Windows Settings menu and type Bluetooth in the search box. Step 2: Select “Find and Fix Problems with Bluetooth Devices” from the suggestions for search results.

That will open the Bluetooth troubleshooting window. Step 3: Tap Next to continue.

The troubleshooter scans your computer for Bluetooth-related problems. Step 4: If a problem is detected, the troubleshooter will fix it automatically. Tap Close to exit the Bluetooth troubleshooter.

Now try to send a file via Bluetooth and check if your Windows PC receives it.

5. Restart the Bluetooth support service

If your computer suddenly stops receiving files from other Bluetooth devices, restart the Windows Bluetooth support service. It can help to get things right. Step 1: Start the Windows Run box with the keyboard shortcut ‘Windows key + R’. Step 2: In the Open dialog box, type services.msc and tap OK.

Step 3: Right click on ‘Bluetooth Support Service’ and select Restart.

6. Reinstall the Bluetooth adapter

This means deleting your device’s Bluetooth adapter from Windows Device Manager. You don’t have to worry about finding or downloading a new Bluetooth adapter; your computer will handle the reinstallation. Follow the steps below to get it done. Step 1: Open the Windows Quick Access menu (Windows Key + X) and select Device Manager.

Step 2: Expand the Bluetooth driver menu and right click on ‘Generic Bluetooth Adapter’.

Note: Check this if you cannot find the Bluetooth adapter in your PC’s Device Manager guide to learn what to do. Step 3: Select Remove device from the context menu.

Step 4: Tap Delete button at the confirmation prompt to continue.

The Bluetooth driver will be removed from your computer. Continue to the next step to reinstall the driver. Step 5: Tap Action in the Device Manager menu bar.

Step 6: Select ‘Scan for hardware changes’.

That will reload Device Manager and reinstall the newly deleted Bluetooth driver. You can further update the driver if Windows 10 still does not receive files via Bluetooth after reinstallation. Step 7: Right-click on the Bluetooth driver and select Update driver.

Step 8: Select ‘Search automatically for updated driver software’.

Your PC will search online and notify you if an updated version of the driver is available for your computer.
