Guide: Gboard vs TouchPal: Comparison and Review

TouchPal was one of the first keyboard apps I tried on my first Android phoneIt is still one of the most downloaded keyboard apps. Over the years, Gboard, SwiftKey and Swype have emerged to rival TouchPal. Let’s see how it compares to one Google’s Gboard app. TouchPal is known for its endless selection of fonts, emoji themes and customizations. Additional features like a clipboard, automatic symbol linking and gesture support make it a solid competitor. 1. Typing speed, style and accuracy

A keyboard’s primary function is typing, and everything else is just an add-on. In TouchPal you can type as you would on a regular keyboard or use the Curve and Wave modes. The curve is just another name for sliding typing. Touchpal turns it on by default and works similar to sliding typing on Swype.

What interested me was Wave. It is a hybrid of predictive text and glide typing where the app will try to predict whole sentences instead of words or even sentences. TouchPal calls it Sense sign technology. So if you type ‘w’, TouchPal doesn’t just suggest possible words but also the combinations of how the sentence can end upIt’s fun, but it can take you a while to get used to it. What TouchPal excels at is the ability to learn from Twitter too. Using it and importing all your contact names will help you write names quickly.

During my tests, TouchPal was unable to predict my name. Testing other people’s names in my contacts app also produced similar results. Maybe it only recognizes American names? Gboard predicted names accurately as I tested it multiple times.

Gboard provides the traditional predictive text it will learn from your continued use of the app. There is no integration with social media, but it can sync contacts to retrieve names. You can save words in your dictionary on the phoneThe sliding typing works effortlessly.

TouchPal uses Google’s technology to convert speech to text. So, a comparison in this area would be unfair when you consider how well speech to text works with Gboard. Predictive writing experience was similar in both apps. However, TouchPal had trouble predicting the names despite syncing my contact book. On the plus side, Wave seems to be a good addition, but you may have to spend time on it too. Gboard also makes it easy to switch to other keyboards. Just long press on the ‘globe’ icon. That makes using multiple keyboards easy.

2. Emojis, GIFs and Fonts

Gboard has a good collection of emojis and a search function. You can search for emojis by name or choose a category at the bottom of the screen.

Gboard offers both still and animated stickers, and you can download more by clicking the ‘+’ icon. Minis are stickers based on your avatar. You can further customize it by changing the hairstyle and color, eye color, face type and so on. When you’re done, Gboard will create a lot of mockups in different settings.

Like Gboard, TouchPal comes with emojis and sticker packs that you can download and share in any app. Although the library is arguably larger, it is not possible to search for it. TouchPal supports searching for GIFs and it takes a while to load the results. A new search requires you to start over. Gboard has a search bar above GIFs so you can search and browse at the same time. TouchPal shows trending GIFs.

TouchPal can also create AvatarMoji, which means you can create an emoji based on your face and expressions. Gboard integrates with Bitmoji, owned by Snap Inc., which also owns Snapchat. When tested on the iPhone, the results were satisfactory in both cases. In the case of GIFs and emojis, a lot also depends on your personal preferences, so it is up for debate.

TouchPal comes with many fonts to choose from. If you like a particular font, chances are you will find it. I don’t understand the Games and Trends in it. The latter is a kind of news hub. Why would a keyboard app add games and seemingly random news stories to their app? Focus on things that matter.

3. Translate it, cut it

Do you travel a lot? Then a keyboard that supports text and voice translation is a boon for you. Google Translate comes with a robust API used by many services, including Gboard. Just click on the G icon and tap the language icon. You can now choose to translate text into any language in real time.

In TouchPal, you have to download the language pack which is cool because then it should work offline too. The language library is limited compared to Google’s, but includes the most popular. Tap the TouchPal logo, tap Languages and download the one you need.

While TouchPal detected and translated the ‘how’ to ‘hoe’ using the Dutch example above, it did not translate after that. I have tried other languages and phrases, but got mixed results. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. Not very reliable in my opinion.

TouchPal’s clipboard manager works perfectly. TouchPal does not list the limit on the number of clips that can be saved, and you can also save the frequently used clips by clicking the Create button buttonFor some odd reason, Google added and then decided to remove the clipboard functionality before it even hit the Play Store. It is handy feature, and as a Gboard user, I miss it.

Search everywhere

Google Search supports Gboard and you search the web directly in the app. If that’s not enough, you can also search for and share locations on Maps.

YouTube is the largest video hosting site in the world and all videos are now searchable with Gboard. That makes Gboard really powerful as an app. Oh, do you want to share contact information? You can now do it directly from Gboard.

Features or nice

TouchPal is free to use and the pro version costs $ 2.99 / year. The pro version unlocks cloud sync for a dictionary, removes ads, adds more themes and predictions that have room for improvement. The app is a lot of fun if you like to play with fonts, stickers, emojis, and themes. There are some useful ones features like a clipboard. Gboard is completely free to download with no ads. The app’s library of emojis and GIFs may be smaller, but should be enough for most people. When it comes to productivity and integration, Gboard blows the competition out of the water.
