Guide: Google Maps vs HERE WeGo: Comparison and Review

Gone are the days of personal navigation devices or PNDs. Today we have the almighty smartphone to put 100 gadgets in one device, and seamless navigation is one of them. Of the many offline navigation apps available in the market, Google Maps and Nokia’s HERE WeGo are two of the best options. But we’ll try to find out which of these two is the best in this post.

For this, we tested both apps with an Android phone and have tested their online and offline features, and we’ll help you decide which app to have on your phone Download WeGo HERE Download Google Maps

1. Price

Previously, Nokia’s HERE WeGo (formerly HERE Maps) was an exclusive feature of Nokia devices, and their availability was also quite limited. Only after a considerable amount of time did the company decide to put it together with all its features, and today, Android users can enjoy its benefits on their phones, for free.

Google, on the other hand, has always been available on a variety of platforms. Although the availability of features has varied drastically, for Android, Google Maps was the best solution already out there features and that too for free. Hence, when choosing the best app based on the price, both apps are on the top. They offer their services for free, and that includes offline navigation. Here we go: 1 Google Maps: 1

2. Offline availability

Since we’ve already mentioned the topic of offline navigation in the last point, we’ll talk about it in a slightly more detailed way here. Since my Nokia days (Symbian OS), when the devices weren’t as fast as we see today, HERE has been my go-to solution for offline navigation. There are several reasons why I chose it, but the main reason I chose it was that there was no limit to how long I can keep the offline copy of the maps for a particular location on my device.

One area where Here WeGo falls short in Google Maps, however, is the ability to customize the offline maps. We will talk about it in the following points. For now, let’s move on and talk about Google Maps. Google has made its Maps app great, and it comes as a standard / preloaded app for Android to phones however, when it comes to offline navigation, Google generally does a great job. Still, sometimes it will surprise you with the odd man out thrown at you at the worst possible time. I love that you can choose the area you want to save or make available for offline use, but the time limit or the fact that offline maps have an expiration date is a huge turnoff. But in the end, both apps have good if not comparable offline features, and they compete for neck and neck with each other. Here we go: 2 Google Maps: 2

3. App install size

Don’t be fooled by the application size mentioned in the play store. In reality, these apps consume a lot of memory on your phone. That’s what the size of the application is. I have both apps on my phone to see how much storage space they add up, especially if there are no offline maps stored on the phone. To make it a fair comparison, both apps were installed from scratch and used for 15 days, and after that use, these measurements were recorded.

Not surprised, but Google Maps consumes almost double the storage space consumed by HERE WeGo. Google Maps app installed on my Android Oreo uses a total of 395MB of space. This includes app installation, user data and the cache. HERE WeGo on the other side of my phone, Android Oreo uses a total of 190MB of space. This includes app installation, user data and the cache. In general, 200MB storage may not be much for devices with 64GB or more storage, but some users have modest 4GB or 8GB storage space. This difference can mean a lot to them. That’s why HERE, WeGo gets a slight advantage over Google Maps in this regard. Here we go: 3 Google Maps: 2

4. Offline map change

One of the most significant drawbacks of Google Maps is a big advantage to it too. Don’t forget; we’ve talked about how to save custom offline maps to your device using Google Maps. While you save offline maps with Google, the app will ask you for the area you are on your phone on the other hand, HERE WeGo has areas to download for offline use.

It may look like a small one feature, but it’s a huge benefit to Google Maps. Users can choose the area they want to save for offline use, and it, in turn, helps to save a significant amount of resources, be it data or even the storage space on your computer. phone All you need to do is go to offline maps and select the area you want to save for offline use. It can be as small as 20 square kilometres. Making it a clear winner in this round. Here we go: 3 Google Maps: 3

5. Traffic updates

Both apps have a lot of users, which is why they have pretty accurate traffic estimates. However, Google has a better traffic algorithm compared to HERE. Google Maps can show you the traffic density on a given street to hefty traffic, indicated by a stark red colour.

However, Here Maps has only very basic information when it comes to colour usage, and heavy traffic is indicated with red, moderate with yellow, and easy traffic is indicated with green. This deeper color gradation really has a big impact and is a very helpful feature for the user. Here we go: 3 Google Maps: 4

6. Active recalculation

This is another really interesting feature that’s a must-have for any navigation app. With active rerouting, the app can change the assigned route between trips when the app detects a traffic jam on the way. Unfortunately, HERE WeGo is missing this feature even though you can follow live traffic updates. Conversely, Google wins this one because it estimates the route based on the shortest time. Although there have been instances where I’ve been stranded on a remote path, all thanks to Google, that’s for another time.

Google Maps has a very interesting and accurate rerouting algorithm, if there is a traffic jam on the way, Google will try to avoid that entirely first, but if the situation has changed while you are on the road, it will warn you about it and suggest an alternative route. In part, I reckon this is because Google owns Waze and has a large group of active users who continue to warn fellow passengers about road hazards and conditions. Here we go: 3 Google Maps: 5

7. Integration of third-party apps

Last but not least, Google Maps is everywhere and has a very rich integration of third-party apps or services. On the other hand, HERE WeGo is relatively new to this game and has a long way to go before it reaches the same point Google Maps is on today.

Google all the way

It is true that Google is a large company with many developers, plus a fan community that helps them improve their products. Being a long-time HERE Maps user, I can say they have come a long way from where they were before too. Nowadays, you can access indoor maps, 3D maps, live updates, etc. All these point in one direction and that the Lord is also going in the right direction. Maybe it’s not as powerful as Google Maps is now, but 10 years later, who knows, it could be HERE.
