How to Check Laptop’s Battery Health in Windows 10 – Guide
The Battery Report function in Windows 10 determines if your PC’s power supply is running out or if you still have some life left. Here it is how to keep track of how long your laptop battery lasts. Our favorite electronic devices are powered by batteries, but they shouldn’t last forever. The good news is that Windows 10 laptops offer a Battery Report tool that shows you if your battery is still working or has reached the end of its life cycle. You can generate an HTML file with battery usage data, capacity history and life estimates with just a few simple keystrokes. This report will let you know if it needs to be replaced long before it fails.
Generate Battery Report in PowerShell
The Battery Report is generated using Windows PowerShell, a built-in command-line tool that you may have never used before. The easiest way to access it is to right-click the Start icon and select Windows PowerShell (Admin) from the menu that appears. A bang-up the window may ask for permission to make changes to your device; say yes. The blue PowerShell command window will appear, allowing you to enter commands to automate certain tasks in Windows 10. Type or paste powercfg / batteryreport / output “C:battery-report.html” into the window and press Enter to run the command. PowerShell will then report the HTML file name of the generated battery life report and where it was saved on your computer. In this case, it is called battery-report.html and was saved on drive C. You can now safely close PowerShell.
See battery report
Open Windows File Explorer and go to drive C. There you should find the battery life report saved as an HTML file. Double-click the file to open it in your preferred browser. The report will outline the health of your laptop battery, how it’s doing and how much longer it can last. At the top of the Battery Report, you’ll see basic information about your computer, followed by battery specifications. In the recent usage section, note each time the laptop ran on battery power or was connected to AC power. Every drain in the last three days is tracked in the Battery Usage section. You can also get a complete battery usage history from the Usage History section. The battery capacity history section shows how capacity has changed over time. On the right is the Project Capacity, or the amount of battery designed to support. On the left, you can see your laptop’s current battery’s total charge capacity, which will likely decrease over time the more you use the device. This brings us to the battery life estimates section. On the right, you’ll see how long it should last based on the project’s capacity; on the left, you’ll see how long it actually lasts. A chain, final the estimated battery life is at the bottom of the report. In that case, my PC would last 6:02:03 in design capacity, but it will actually handle 4:52:44.
