Guide: How to Customize CMD on Windows 10 PC

Blessed are those who know the power of Command Prompt in Windows and are aware of the great things that can be done with it. Even though it looks simple, it can do incredible things that you will find difficult in the normal Windows GUI. One of the best examples I can give is of sfc / scannow and DISM commands used to scan and fix system errors in Windows 10, which is otherwise not possible in a normal Windows 10 GUI based environment. Even some of the powerful virus protection packs use the command prompt to scan and disinfect the system when there is a virus outbreak on your computer. However, the command prompt doesn’t look that trendy compared to other Windows 10 applications on your computer. It’s a dull black screen with white text on it, which is quite small; making it barely readable on a large screen with full HD resolution. But that’s the default view, and there are options that let you tweak the look of the boring command prompt and make it look cool.

To start

To get started, the first thing you need to do is launch Command Prompt and I think the best way to get that done is to simply search for ‘CMD’ in the Start menu. The second option is to open up the Run with Windows + R box button and running the CMD command.

To start the customization, right-click on the title bar of the CMD prompt and select the Properties option from the context menu. A window will open up with 4 separator tabs namely option, font, layout and colors. So let’s take a look at How to use the options available on all four tabs to customize your Command Prompt.

Command options

Here you can control the cursor size and make it Small, Medium or Large according to your requirements. The command history keeps track of all the commands you enter and use the up arrow you can open these commands again. So here you can control the amount of buffer to be kept.

Aside from that, you have an editing option that makes it easier for users familiar with Windows keyboard shortcuts to work with the same keyboard shortcuts in Command Prompt. But if you want to use the old, legacy-like environment, check the option and restart the CMD.

Command fonts and layout

Here you can edit the display font of the command prompt. You can increase the size of the text to make it readable and also add the bold text effect according to your needs. When it comes to the font part, there are only 3 fonts to choose from by default.

There are ways to add a custom font for the Command Prompt, but that is beyond the scope of this article. Let me know in the comments if you are interested in this. If there is enough response, I will certainly accept it up in one of my next tutorials The Layout tab allows you to configure the size and position of the CMD Windows.

Command colors

This tab is the tab where most of the magic lies. You can control the colors of screen text, screen background, popup text and popup background here. There are some preset solid colors to choose from or you can use RGB to define a custom color. Any changes you make here will be reflected in the box below so you can determine the appropriate color.

Ultimately, the option to choose coverage would be the final touch the adjustment option. You may have to restart the command prompt for the changes to take effect, but it would be worth it.

Conclusion

So that’s How to tweak the look of boring CMD in Windows 10 and make it cooler, funkier, and more accessible when it comes to font and window size.
