Guide: How to Enable/Disable Notifications in Outlook.com

When using a web-based email client such as Outlook.com, it is often crazy to miss new emails simply because you forgot to leave the tab open in your browser. However, things have changed for the better. Recently, Outlook.com introduced the ability to send notifications through your browser when you receive an email, even when it is not active, which is pretty cool. But since the feature is disabled by default, let’s see how to enable it. And when you get tired of being bothered by tons of Outlook.com desktop notifications, you’ll also find ways to turn them off or pause them quite easily.

Turn on Desktop notifications

At the time of writing this post, Outlook.com desktop notifications were limited to Google Chrome and Firefox. So if you are using Microsoft Edge or Opera, you may not see the option to enable them. Aside from that, enabling desktop notifications should only take a second of your time. Once you log into your Outlook.com account, simply tap the gear-shaped Quick Settings icon in the top right corner of the screen and turn on the toggle next to Desktop Notifications. And that will enable the desktop notifications for Outlook.com. Note: When your browser asks you for confirmation, click Allow. From now on, you will receive a toast notification in the bottom right corner of the screen when you receive a new email message. That should happen even if the web app is not actively running on a tab in your browser. However, Outlook.com desktop notifications work differently with Chrome and Firefox. In Chrome they show up as system notifications and you can view them at any time by opening the Windows Notification Center.

On Firefox, the notifications are part of the browser itself. So you don’t get a chance to check them once they disappear.

With Chrome, you may not see Outlook.com notifications (nor any other notifications) if Focus Assist is enabled, so make sure to disable this feature if you’re waiting for an important email. Neither browser will send notifications when you close them – you must have Chrome or Firefox running on your desktop if you want to continue to receive notifications from Outlook.com.

Turn off desktop notifications

If you don’t like Outlook.com desktop notifications, you can turn them off by turning off the toggle next to Desktop Notifications after opening the Quick Settings side panel. You can also disable them on all your desktops if you wish. Start by clicking on the Show all Outlook settings option at the bottom of the Quick Settings side panel.

In the Setting box, click General, and then click Notifications. Under the Desktop Notifications section, click the link labeled Turn off desktop notifications on all devices and you are done.

Alternatively, you can turn off notifications for Outlook.com without visiting Outlook.com first. The procedures are different for both Chrome and Firefox, so let’s break things down by browser.

Google Chrome

In Chrome, copy and paste the following path in the address bar of a new tab and press Enter: chrome: // settings / content / notifications Note: If you prefer the long way, open the Chrome menu and click Settings> Advanced> Site Settings> Notifications to go to the same screen. On the notification screen that appears up, find the Outlook.com URL and click the three-dot icon next to it.

Select Block to pause all Outlook.com desktop notifications – you can enable it yourself at a later time directly from this screen. Or select the Delete option to permanently disable Outlook.com desktop notifications.

Mozilla Firefox

In Firefox, copy and paste the following path in the address bar of a new tab and press Enter: about: preferences # privacy Note: Another way to get to the same screen is to open the Firefox menu, click Options, then click Privacy & Security. Under the Permissions section, click Settings button next to Notifications. Click the drop-down menu next to the Outlook.com URL, then select Block to pause notifications – you can enable this at a later time by selecting Allow.

Or click Remove Website to remove the item from the permissions list and permanently disable Outlook.com notifications.

No more excuses

Outlook.com’s desktop notifications are a great way to stay up-to date regarding new emails. However, the feature is still relatively new, so expect the odd quirks of notifications not showing up once in a while. Hopefully Microsoft will fix all bugs, support more browsers and keep adding even more useful features to turn Outlook.com into a serious email client. The next up Did you know that Outlook.com also allows you to add an image to your email signature? Check out our guide to learn how to do that.
