How to enable TPM so you may upgrade to Windows 11 on your PC – Guide

Windows 10 users can download Windows 11 for free right now. However, if your PC does not meet Microsoft’s system requirements, you may not be able to upgrade. Support for TPM 2.0 is one of those requirements. Don’t worry if you don’t understand what a TPM is; most of us didn’t either, until Microsoft made it a Windows requirement. A TPM, or Trusted Platform Module, is a hardware-based security solution designed to keep hackers away from your computer. TPMs must be installed on computers built within the last five years, but not on older devices. It is possible to install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, but it is not advisable. The safest approach, as I mentioned in my post about failing to install Windows 11 on my previous PC, is to buy a new PC and upgrade to the latest operating system from Microsoft. Even if you have a brand new PC, it may not be able to meet TPM 2.0 requirements. TPM is enabled by default on some computers but not others. That was the case with the 3080 Ti building I just purchased. I used Microsoft’s Health Check program and met all requirements with the exception of TPM 2.0. I knew I had a TPM because it was a new PC; all i had to do was find out how to turn it on. Methods for enabling TPM on PCs that have it are detailed by Microsoft; however, the material is spread over several pages. As a result, we created this tutorial simple tutorial to help you enable TPM on your PC.

How to enter the BIOS

You will need to enter your system BIOS to enable the TPM. This may sound daunting, but it’s a relatively simple process. One way to enter the BIOS is by pressing Start and going to Settings > Update & security > Recovery > Restart now. After restarting the PC, you will see an options menu. Choose Troubleshooting > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart. Alternatively, holding down the Shift key when restarting the computer should also bring up up the BIOS menu. Some systems allow you to enter BIOS by pressing Delete or F1 during boot as well – you will usually see a text prompt telling you which key to press to enter BIOS during the PC boot process.

Enabling TPM in BIOS

After accessing the BIOS screen, it may be necessary to do some searching and searching to find an option to enable the TPM. If you can’t find any TPM settings to enable, don’t give up hope: some modern PCs have TPM alternatives. For example, my PC has an Asus motherboard with PTT, which is a kind of firmware-based TPM alternative, so to enable TPM I had to navigate to Advanced > Find PCH-FW Configuration, where there was an option to enable PTT . So, if you can’t find a TPM switch in your BIOS, check your motherboard manual (or Google your specific motherboard model) to see if there is a TPM alternative. When done, save and exit. Run the Health Check app again and now it should say that your PC meets the Windows 11 requirements. Note that Windows Update (found in Settings) may still say that your PC doesn’t meet all the requirements for upgrading to Windows 11, even if Microsoft’s PC Health Check app (which is specifically designed to check that your PC meets the requirements). Windows system requirements 11 ) says you are allowed to upgrade. I don’t know why this discrepancy might occur, but it won’t necessarily prevent you from upgrading. You can verify that you have successfully enabled the TPM by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Device Security. Under Security Processor, select Security Processor Details. A list of specifications will show whether TPM is enabled or not. In my case, it was. After all that, it’s safe to install Windows 11 on your PC. Now you’re free to enjoy all that Windows 11 has to offer. While enabling the TPM adds extra steps to updating Windows 11, it doesn’t require a lot of technical knowledge. The most important factor is that your machine supports TPM 2.0 to get started.
