Guide: How to Enable Transparent Start Menu in Windows 10 PC

As systems evolve over time – be it a PC or a smartphone, it gives users more independence in customization options. And when it comes to Windows 10, these options are huge. For example, the Start menu in Windows can be changed in a number of ways – by removing tiles, colors, etc. But those are the system settings – a simple tug of the switch button and you’re all set. But there is another way that both the Windows Start menu and the taskbar can be made translucent. While it is a tedious process, the end results are quite impressive. So let’s get started how to get transparent start menu in Windows 10. Note: This process requires the modification of the Windows registry files. As you may know, the registry contains the settings and configurations used by Windows.

So no matter how minor the change, please proceed with the utmost care and backupup of the registry files before making any changes.

1. Add user

Before making any changes to the registry keys and values, a user must have full access. However, the process is simple and hardly takes any time. Start by opening the Registry Editor by typing Regedit in the Run menu (Windows + R) and go to the location below. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryshellcmd Right click on cmd in the left pane and select Permissions. Click on Advanced button in the Permissions window, which opens the advanced security settings for cmd.

Once inside, click Change in the top right corner so you can add users to give the necessary permissions.

Enter the name of the Microsoft account or local user used to sign in to the computer and click Check Names for Verification. Now click OK to return to the main permission window. In the meantime, the new user will reflect here.

2. Edit the most important values

Once the access is granted, go over the next path that opens a path with a few values. HKEY_CURRENT _USER SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows Current Version Themes Personalize

Right click on the one named ‘EnableTransparency’ and change the value to 0 from 1 and click OK.

This will immediately make the Windows Start menu transparent. Returning is easy. Just press Change and change the value back to 1.

Note: Please note that the above method will not work on the latest version of Windows 10 Creators Update.

Bonus Trick: Change the transparency of the taskbar

Likewise, Windows 10 taskbar can also be made transparent through a simple step. Go to the following path in the Registry Editor. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE MicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced

Once here, right click on the white space and create a 32 bit DWORD value and set the name as Use OLEDTaskbarTransparency and value as 1. Now go to Task Manager and restart Windows Explorer. The taskbar is immediately transformed. The good thing about the above trick is that it also works seamlessly on Windows 10 Creators Update. However, keep in mind that both the taskbar and the start menu cannot be made transparent at the same time.

Parting thought

The Windows Registry Editor contains a lot tricks which allows a variety of changes to be made to your system. And the best part is that these changes can be easily reverted by a change to the key value or, worst case scenario, by restoring the backup file. So are you going to try this simple hack?
