YouTube allows anyone to share a video on their website or blog by embedding it with an iframe code. You just copy and paste the code and the video will appear on the page. The visitor does not even have to leave the site to view it. You don’t have to click through to YouTube. The problem is that even if the visitor doesn’t watch or interact with the video, YouTube in any capacity will still collect and store data about them. Not cool. This is done with the help of cookies that are placed in the user’s browser when it loads a web page containing a YouTube video. These cookies are used to track users, display targeted advertisements (Google bread and butter) and add information to the user profile. Yes, they have profiles for everyone. When you enable privacy mode, YouTube will not collect and store information about the users who visit your site on its server unless they watch the video. Now Google only collects data when the user clicks on the game button and watches or interacts with the video in any capacity. If you leave the video alone, no data will be collected. Why should you care? If you don’t know, the EU has just passed a new regulation called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDRP). Hence, it is important that anyone embedding YouTube videos should enable the privacy mode option first. How to Enable privacy enhanced mode in YouTube
Google has played its cards smartly. They added privacy mode but the option is off by default. Here are the steps to activate it. Open the video you want to share in a new tab. You will notice the familiar Share button below the video. Click here.
You will now see some options such as names of people in your network that you can share the video with, a shareable link ready to copy, and button
When you select the Embed option, you will see an iframe code ready to be copied and pasted.
Scroll down a bit and you will find the option for privacy mode at the bottom. Check the box to enable it.
Now you are ready to scroll back up and copy and paste the code wherever you want. You can rest assured that your users’ data is secure and their privacy is respected. But how do you check whether you have added the correct code? Good question. This is the code when the privacy mode option was disabled.
This is what the code looks like with the option enabled.
Notice any difference? The URL has changed. Instead of using youtube.com, Google now uses youtube-nocookie.com. Just as you think I tried to access the domain name and it returns a classic 404 error. You can use this information to check which sites are sharing YouTube videos while privacy mode is on. Just check their source code and search for the nocookie URL. Note: Don’t forget to include ‘www’ in the URL, as the SSL certificate for the domain is not valid without ‘www’ in the URL.
