Developer Crystal Dynamics imprisoned Lara on a weird island with even darker mysteries in the 2013 Tomb Raider remake, pushing her into peril against her will. She has now acquired agency though. She is rushing into the conflict in Rise of the Tomb Raider at her own pace in search of the key to eternal life. It’s understandable if that idea sounds cliche. In both Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, the Holy Grail bestows the same ability. The more contemporary and appropriate Nathan Drake spent Uncharted 2 looking for the Tree of Life. However, Rise of the Tomb Raider grounds Lara’s narrative with its own likeable characters and gravitas. Lara chooses to look for the Divine Source the thing that has the power to end sadness and death rather than accept that her father has passed away. Even the villains are motivated by compelling motivations to seek out the supernatural power. But Crystal Dynamics doesn’t rely on magic to tell stories; instead, it incorporates mystical elements into its settings in a way that makes sense. The game sets you up for this right away and has a quiet undercurrent going all throughout.

About the game

The 2015 action-adventure video game Rise of the Tomb Raider was created by Crystal Dynamics and released by Microsoft Studios and Square Enix’s European division. Like its predecessor, Rise of the Tomb Raider enjoys a high-concept involving the search for an artefact that gives perpetual life that leans ever so slightly sci-fi. It’s big-budget Indiana Jones fare that moves at a great speed through giddy, outrageous sequences that are supported by a compelling emotional thread. Lara and her late father are at the center of Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Camilla Ludington’s sensitive portrayal of Lara captures the nuanced relationship she has with the ghosts he left behind. Lara excels moment by moment. She is self-assured, intelligent, and responds to danger with the cool composure and instinct of an action heroine. But because of her most recent experience, she is damaged and exudes a captivating weariness that gives her jokes a self-deprecating edge. Lara Croft has never had a more likeable personality as a character. Her goals are more nuanced as well.

She is motivated by obsession this time rather than survival game, and we finally get to see her in a grey area. In contrast to 2013’s Tomb Raider, she is now a formidable combatant who deals more damage than she receives, so we wasn’t wincing at her continuous shattered bones, but we did notice the deterioration of her moral compass. Other than that, the supporting characters in Rise of the Tomb Raider are less well-developed, but fortunately they get a lot less screen time than Lara’s tasty adversaries. It would be spoiling to discuss these two in too much length, along with the mystery organization they belong to, but they are morally repugnant adversaries, and their struggle for dominance produces some truly horrific scenes.

Final Words

Crystal Dynamics has combined straight-forward action adventure with “RPG-lite” character growth, just like in the previous game, and given it all a strong survivalist theme. The plot is fairly linear, but it leads you through a few large locations that are packed with optional Challenge Tombs secret ruins where you must solve a challenging riddle to obtain a potent perk for Lara and side objectives. You’ll need to locate them first, though. We hope our article on “How to Fix Lag in Rise of the Tomb Raider” will surely help you to do so.
