How to Generate Macintosh System Report – Guide

One of the hidden gems of the Mac operating system is the ability to get a very complete picture of the computer’s hardware, software details along with error logs and warning messages with a single selection. This feature it’s called the System Report, and this 4-10MB file is automatically created by your Mac when you make that selection. This file can then be sent back to our support department and allows us to find out any configuration details or software settings that may be causing a problem when using the X-Rite software or when connecting to your device.

First create a system report for your Mac

In any program, select About this Mac from the Apple icon in the upper left corner. This screen provides an overview of your Macintosh information. You cannot send e-mail or print from this screen. You need an extra step. In the middle of this window, click System Report to open the System Information Utility. This is Apple’s detailed report on everything inside your computer. The program starts with the Hardware overview. This report includes the model identifier, the installed memory, its serial number and a ton of other things.

Option 1: cut and paste in an email or chat

Unlike the information on About this Mac, you can copy the text from the System Report. In the main part of the window, click and drag to select the information you need and select Copy from the Edit menu. I like this option because you can support only the information they need. This is great for a supported online chat. When copying and pasting, you’re less likely to make a mistake, as opposed to retyping something in the About This Mac window. If support asks for information, not in the overview, look for the topic on the left side of the report. For example, support may want to know what type of memory is on your Mac. Select Memory on the left. The program does not allow you to copy the top panel of the window, but it does allow you to copy the information below.

Option 2: Email a PDF of the system report

If you look at the File menu in the System Information utility, you’ll notice that you can send the information directly to Apple. There is no option to send it to someone else, but you can create one. When you’re in the program, go to the File menu and select Print. Instead of printing to the selected printer, choose PDF in the lower left corner of the dialog. Then choose Send PDF by mail. This will open the default email program on your Mac and attach a .pdf of the report. If you use a web-based email program like Gmail or Yahoo, choose Save as PDF and attach to an email. The PDF report has its serial number, so make sure it’s someone you trust to get this information.

Option 3: send the report as a .SPX file

Your Mac can save all of this information in a System Profile file with a .spx extension. From the File menu, select Save and all details will be saved to this file. If the person you send the file to doesn’t have a Mac, they can change the extension to .xml and they’ll open up on any browser (although it’s not very pretty). Quickly sending details about your Mac to technical support saves you time and offers a solution to your problems faster.
