Guide: How to Know Who Collects Your Data While Browsing Online

Most of the websites you visit daily track your online activity to display ads and content that match your preferences. As per the W3C specification, most web browsers, such as Chrome and Internet Explorer, can now send a Do Not Track request header to let the websites you visit know that you do not want to be tracked. However, the website may immediately decline the browser request and continue to track your data. You must think there is nothing you can do about it and to be honest I thought so too. As I love my privacy, I wanted to prevent all websites from tracking me or at least notifying me of how I am being tracked. Finally after some research I found a great tool called Spooky, which allows you to see all the trackers that follow you on certain websites. So let’s see how to install Ghostery and how it can help with all anonymous web tracking.

Trackers track with Ghostery

To install Ghostery in your browser, open the homepage and click Download button on the top. Depending on the browser you are using, the website will download and install the respective extension. Before the post, we’ll see how Ghostery works in Chrome. After installing the extension I recommend that you restart the browser. This will make Ghostery start tracking all the pages you are working on.

From now on, when you visit a web page that uses different trackers to track your online activities, Ghostery will notify you with a pop-up balloon in the top right corner. You can click on the Ghostery icon to get a complete list of all trackers from a particular website running in the background. If you are not sure how a particular tracker works and what kind of data it collects on your computer, you can click the More info link to get a detailed report on the Ghostery website itself.

After checking out all the trackers if you’re not happy with anyone, you can turn them off using Ghostery itself. Right-click on the extension and open the options. Here you can determine which type of trackers you want to disable. In the table you will find all trackers that are in the Ghostery database, arranged in categories. You can search for a tracker you want to block and blacklist it. If there are any websites you want to exclude from the blacklist, add them one at a time to the whitelist.

You can use the plugin to disable all ad trackers and location trackers to protect your privacy. You can pop-up frames and sidebar widgets using the tool. Just find the tracker behind it and block it from the blacklist. In the Advanced section you can control how the extension updates the server’s information.

Conclusion

So that was How to fully take care of your privacy while browsing the web. At least to some extent where you don’t want to be tracked anonymously just to browse the web. Try the service and let us know how it worked out for you.
