Guide: How to Make Reading Fun and Entertaining

For me, reading was just as essential as air when I was young. No really, you’d never catch me without a good book – I read in the car, on the beach, and sometimes, much to my mother’s dismay, at the dinner table. But as I got older, life got in the way. And it only occurred to me how much I miss novels when I set a reading goal and forced myself to start up again. Bring stories to life | Shutterstock It’s not as easy as it used to be; as an adult you are exhausted at the end of the day and want nothing more than to turn your brain off. But luckily technology is great and here to save the day. Whether you’re a previously avid reader trying to get back into the rhythm or you’re trying to appear civilized and intelligent to impress the ladies, there are many fun and affordable ways to fit literature into your busy lifestyle.

First, go to Goodreads

Goodreads is a great way to socialize and sign reading up for an account is completely free. This popular book catalog and review platform lets you keep track of what you’ve read, create lists of books you want to read, set reading goals and track your progress. Find recommendations based on your previous reading or browse new genres. Share and compare books with your friends or interact with authors by following them, participating in the discussion and getting the latest updates. Goodreads lets you track everything from novels to manga to textbooks.

Want more? I personally spent hours on this site reminiscing and browsing potential reads. See our full Goodreads review for more information. Download Goodreads on your Android, Apple device or Kindle. Unfortunately, there is no official app for Windows phone users, but feel free to try out third-party apps such as MetroReads or Epiphany. You can also visit Goodreads.com in your browser at any time. I am on Goodreads. My twelve year old cousin is on Goodreads. Why aren’t you on Goodreads yet?

Audiobook stands for great

I recently discovered the time-saving fun and relative ease of “reading” audiobooks. Really, you just sit there and listen to someone else tell you the story. I used to think this was an escape. But then I thought, what if you are blind? Or worse, what if you have to drive for 40 minutes every day with poor radio reception and the same 3 CDs playing over and over? So I downloaded LibriVox (iTunes, Android). Khamosh’s angle: I heard about LibriVox from Khamosh a while ago. View his complete guides On how to listen to audiobooks on Android or on iPad and iPhone. Besides LibriVox, there are other services like Audible or Audiobooks.com, but LibriVox offers a wide library of public domain recordings for free. Of course, those other sites offer 30-day trials, but after that, you have to pay a monthly subscription. Books in the common domain are free to the public because they generally no longer have copyright and were probably published 100 years ago or earlier. So if you’re in the mood to party with Jane Austen, Mark Twain and HG Wells, LibriVox is a real goldmine. Oh, Jane. More recent audiobooks such as The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner or Game of Thrones are also available for purchase on an individual basis. The multitasking potential is really high here and I highly recommend LibriVox as a time-saving way to catch up on the classics. So go ahead, work out appreciating the reluctant yearning for pride and prejudice; we need more of you, absurdly fit, but surprisingly sentimental souls in the world.

The eBook alternative

Okay. So there are physical books. Then there are audiobooks. Then there are eBooks. And what amazes many people here is that you don’t need a special eReader, like a Kindle or a Nook, to read an eBook. Actually, the Kindle app has been pushed to all devices so you can read from your iPhone, your tablet, your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and yes, even your Windows PhoneAnd all that general domain literature is free here in eBook form, too. Gnarly, right? Boy, wish I knew all this when I was in college. So you can read your eBooks anywhere. But for me, since using LibriVox on my Android phone, I also use its sister app, GuteBooks

If you’re listening to a book in LibriVox, you can tap the three-dot menu and select Open eBook. You’ll then be asked to download GuteBooks if you haven’t already, and you’ll be taken to the accompanying eBook, where you can read or switch media, and pick up where you left off.

Has anyone called?

So there is a huge reservoir of free virtual books and you don’t need to buy additional hardware to access them. But if all of these methods are still too new for you, and you are too old to renew your library card or go to the bookstore, there is still a way to enjoy reading at your leisure.

Moral of the day

So now that you have a great platform to discover content you love, there is no excuse anymore. Find something that inspires you, stimulate that imagination, and never stop.
