Maybe you needed to free up storage space on your iPhone. Maybe you’re just a neat freak and remove all your old text messages. But now you’ve deleted an important text with a picture of your newborn niece or directions to a friend’s party and you need them back. The good news is that if you regularly back up your iPhone, you can recover your deleted text. The bad news is that you may need to delete some of your other data to do it.

Steps: How To Recover Deleted Messages on the iPhone

Let’s face it, most people send and receive a ton of text messages or iMessages every day. Whether talking to friends, families, or co-workers, most of us just have a graveyard of old text messages. After a while, most of us will clean up our messages and delete them from our phones. This can’t just be clean up the message menu of your phone and make it less crowded, it can also put a little bit of storage on your phone like these long conversations can use up pretty. But what if you realized you actually needed to see or refer to an old post after you already deleted it? Whether there are some important links in the post, or some photos you didn’t save, or some other stuff, you may think you’re out of luck. Despite how hopeless you may feel, there are actually a few ways you can potentially get those messages back. In fact, there are four different ways that are looked at in this article to help you get your messages back. When you want to delete a message or conversation on your iPhone, it won’t get deleted right away at that point (similar to how your photos won’t get deleted completely right away). Instead, your messages will only be marked for deletion, still making them inaccessible and invisible to us. They still exist on our phones for a short while until the files are eventually overwritten or permanently deleted. Now that you know a little bit more about what happens when you delete a message, let’s look at the ways to get them back

Contact your cell Phone Provider

One of the first steps you can take to try to recover your messages is to contact your cell phone provider. Many (but not all) cell phone providers keep an ongoing record of the messages sent and received on your phone, and you may have the right to view it. Some companies allow you to log in online and view the accounts, others require you to contact customer service, and others may not keep or release these records at all. Even if this method doesn’t get you anywhere, it’s worth a try if you are serious about recovering your deleted messages.

Recover messages from an iCloud backup

The next method you can try is to restore your methods from an iCloud backup to use. Although a back-up normally one way to ensure that all data and files on your device are always safe, this is not always true for messages. Some companies and mobile phone operators keep a back-up of your messages and others not. Either way, it’s worth a try if the things you’re trying to recover are really that important.

Step 1: Go to and enter your login information. Make sure you get your phone with you because it sent a verification code to your phone you must type before you can log in. Step 2: Click the Text Messages icon (if you don’t see that icon, then your phone operator does not backup messages on iCloud and you can move on to the next method). Step 3: When you see the icon, use the search function to find the message or messages you are looking for. Step 4: Go to the iCloud settings on your phone now and turn off text messages (once you do that, a pop-up will come and you have to select “Save to my iPhone”). Step 5: Then re-enable SMS messages and click “Merge”. After a while, your previously deleted messages should be back on your device.

Recover messages from an iTunes backup

If your operator does not backup your messages or it didn’t work for you for some reason, this is the next method you should try. Again, this may only work if your messages are supported up. If you don’t have a backup this will obviously not work. This works basically the same way you would recover lost data from an iTunes backup.

Step 1: Connect your phone to your computer and wait for iTunes to pop up or apply for the program manually up yourself. Step 2: You will love your phone in the box in the bar at the top of iTunes, and clicking it will take you to your phone’s information page. Step 3: From here simply select Back-up and it would be your phone back to what it was like when you last supported it up.

Use a third-party app to get your messages back

If none of these methods worked for some reason, then you probably need to use a third-party app to try and save your deleted messages. There are many different apps that claim to be able to recover your lost data, but the fact is, some are pretty awful and don’t work. It’s a good idea to refer to online reviews for the different options in this space until you find one that works for you. Some of these can cost you several dollars as well, so make sure to do your research and use the one you consider most reliable. Even if the apps are reliable and work for most, that’s no guarantee they’ll work for you. If you give these methods a try, hopefully at least one of them will be helpful in saving your deleted messages. If not, there’s really nothing more you can do than use it as a lesson to scrutinize messages on your computer phone before removing them. Personally, I keep or take a screenshot of anything important that comes to me in a text message or an iMessage as I tend to delete messages every few weeks or so. This has helped me not lose anything important, without having to keep hundreds or thousands of messages with the fear of having to refer to them later in my life.
