The problem with taking pictures with your digital camera camera is that they end up because it is huge, you need to shrink the JPEG sizes before you can share on services like Flickr or Picasa. You can visit JPEGmini and use the tool right away, but it is recommended that you create an account first. You can also connect via your Facebook or Google accounts, where JPEGmini will ask for your email address in the consent window. Once you are inside, click on the big blue button that says Upload your photos to start uploading. The tool will ask you to select and upload all the photos you want to compress and create a new album for them. Any album you upload can up up to 1000 photos, and can be up up to 200 MB in size. You may upload as many albums as you want.
Once all photos are uploaded, they will be processed by JPEGmini. Processing may take some time depending on the size of your album, but once processing is complete you will be notified by email. The page shows you the original size of the album along with the compressed size.
There is no way to download the individual photos of the album and you have to download the fully compressed album in zip format. There is an option to upload the album directly to Picasa and Flickr as well. Note: Once created, the album is available for seven days and then automatically deleted.
My Verdict
As you can see in the screenshot above, I tried the tool on one of my photos and it was reduced to 0.99MB from around 3.2MB. When I previewed the compressed image and compared it to the original image, I was surprised. I mean, if I ask any person if he can see the difference in two photos, I’m sure he won’t be able to tell which one is original and which one has been processed. The only thing that keeps me from using the service is that it is an online tool. If they come out for the same with a desktop tool I’m sure it will be a huge hit. What do you think?
