Guide: How to Remove Connected Apps From Google Drive

Third-party Chrome apps that you connect to your Google Drive are great to use. They provide seamless access on any PC or Mac, and the fact that these apps use native Google Drive functionalities – auto-save, for example – makes working with them a real treat. But there are many apps that masquerade as free, when in fact you have to pay to access even the most basic functionalities. Unfortunately, removing these is not as easy as removing a Chrome extension. Apps connected to Google Drive take a little effort to get rid of, especially since some of them are integrated into Chrome as well. In addition, there are several permissions granted to these apps so you should also check if there are any access issues with your Google account. So let’s get started. Note: Mindomo is used as an example in this post. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a bad app in any way. Also read: Share Google files Guide: All frequently asked questions answered

1. Disconnect the drive

The option to disconnect an app from Google Drive isn’t immediately visible, which means you have to dive into the settings panel. Step 1: Open Google Drive and click on the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen. Click Settings in the drop-down menu.

Step 2: Click Manage apps.

Step 3: Click on the options button next to an app you want to disconnect, then click Disconnect from disk.

Step 4: Click Disconnect in the pop-upup

That is it! Just repeat the procedure for any other apps you want to disconnect. However, this does not remove certain apps from Chrome itself. Do not worry. You will notice how to do that in the steps below. Note: The Manage Apps screen not only shows connected apps, but also includes services and extensions connected to Google Drive. You can disconnect them using the same procedure. There are even apps on the screen that use Google Drive to store user data, such as WhatsApp.Also read: How to Back-up and sync Google Photos and Drive from computer

2. Remove the app from Chrome

While you can easily disconnect an app from Google Drive and leave it at that, certain apps – not all – are still listed on the app splash screen in Chrome. Although the web browser no longer notices the app launcher, you don’t want useless app icons lying around if you still use it regularly. Step 1: Go to the Chrome app home screen. To do this, type chrome: // apps in the address bar in a new tab and press Enter. If you find the disconnected app in the app launcher, right-click it and select Delete from Chrome.

Step 2: On the confirmation dialog, click Delete. You can also check the box next to Report Abuse if you want Google to be aware of any issues you encountered while using the app, such as excessive ads.

Repeat for any other apps you have already disconnected. Also read: How to Hide quick access on Google Drive

3. Manually remove app permissions

You disconnected the app from Google Drive and you also removed it from the Chrome app launcher. Usually this takes care of the app for good and also disables any permissions previously granted. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check things, and the following steps are more of a precaution than anything else. Cool Tip You can also use the steps below to easily remove an app’s permissions for your Google account without actually disconnecting it from Google Drive. Very useful if you want to keep your apps intact and only use them when you really want to. Step 1: Visit the My Account portal on Google.com. You must sign in with your Google account information to gain access. Find and then click Apps with account access under Sign-in & security.

Step 2: Click Manage apps under Apps with access to your account.

Step 3: Under Third-party apps, check for a listing with the name of the app you disconnected from Google Drive. Probably not, but when you find one, click on it.

Step 4: Click Remove Access.

Step 5: Click OK to remove any remaining permissions from the app.

Good job! You no longer have to worry that disconnected apps can still access your Google account. Note: You should also find any services or accounts on third-party websites – which you can access through your Google account. Feel free to remove unwanted site permissions from this screen at any time. You will be surprised how many sites you just signed up with your Google account and later forgot about. Also read: How to Transfer ownership of a document in Google Drive

Tidy is neat

Most apps are pretty good with the amount of functionality they offer, but it’s annoying when some of them try to force a paid version in a pinch, while claiming to be free or ‘basic’. And Google Drive really should make the whole process of removing unwanted apps easier. Maybe a Manage Apps option on the Google Drive dashboard itself would have been nice. Any ideas?
