Guide: How To Restore Last Session in Chrome

Google Chrome is one of the most popular browsers and certainly one of the best out there. However, this does not mean that it is perfect. It doesn’t crash very often, but if it does, sometimes your last session won’t reopen. Instead of fixing it automatically, you have to do it manually. Your PC may also shut down unexpectedly, causing all your open tabs in Chrome to be lost. Of course, Chrome offers you to restore the previous session, but sometimes this doesn’t work. Keep reading to find out some very useful things tips to reopen your last session in Chrome. (Good news: you can do it in Incognito mode too!)

Always pick up where you left off

Before we get into session restore, the smartest thing you can do is change your startup settings in Chrome to always choose up where you left off. Here’s How to do it: When you enable this option, you don’t have to worry about losing the tabs you had open when you last closed Chrome.

Reopen your last session in Chrome

In the event that your PC or browser has crashed and you were unable to load your previous session by simply restoring it, there is still hope instead of getting the message that Chrome has not shut down properly. Do not give upas you have several options at your disposal.

Keyboard shortcuts

Did you know Chrome has built-in shortcuts to restore tabs? Mac users will need to hold down Command, Shift and T simultaneously to get the last used tab, or press Command and Y together to go to History. For Windows users, these shortcuts are Control, Shift and T for restoring the closed tab and Control with H for getting into the history. If the shortcuts don’t work for any reason, here’s how to do it manually.

Restore tabs from history

You can open the History submenu manually. When you open Chrome, click on the menu button in the upper right corner. Then click on History and you will see a selection of recently closed tabs. There you can open your previously visited tabs at once. For example, it says “4 tabs”. In that case, clicking this link will reopen all four tabs.

You can click History at the top of this drop-down menu to get a better look at your entire browsing history. If you haven’t used Chrome after the crash, you should see all the tabs you lost at the top of this list.

How to Reopen your last incognito session in Chrome

That’s right! You can even restore your previous session with Incognito mode. Although incognito does not save your browsing history, cookies, etc., you can still restore your session. However, it doesn’t work in the same way as normal browsing in Chrome. There is no “History” option in incognito. The keyboard shortcuts mentioned earlier for restoring tabs don’t work in the incognito. This was intended by the design of this browse mode, and it’s a good thing. But imagine yourself in a situation where you need to quickly close all your Incognito tabs. For example, you can do Christmas shopping and your wife comes in. You don’t want to spoil the surprise, so close the window immediately. There is even a way to recover from that. Since this option is not built in, you will need a third party extension. Don’t worry, it is completely safe and tested.

OneTab Chrome extension

OneTab is a very innovative and useful Google extension that is free and safe to use. It bundles all your tabs together for a better preview of your browsing. Instead of having 20 open tabs, you can open them all with the click of one button. This saves a lot of memory (Chrome uses quite a bit of it) and time. The best part is that you can even restore your incognito sessions with it. You must first enable it in incognito mode. After you download and install OneTab, it will appear in the top right corner of your screen next to other plugins. Right click on it and select ‘Manage Extensions’. Scroll down to the center of the page, find ‘Allow in incognito’ and pull the slider to the right. Now you can restore your sessions in Chrome, even in incognito mode.

Other browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge allow retrieval of previous sessions even in their private browsing modes, while Chrome and Opera still don’t have this option built in. It’s a good decision from a privacy standpoint, but if you accidentally close a tab, you can only resort to third-party options.

Session saved

As you can see, if you accidentally or intentionally close your browsing session in Chrome, you are not helpless. You have a variety of native Chrome options at your disposal unless you prefer to browse privately. In that case, you may need a third-party extension. There are other extensions for this particular purpose, but we only tested OneTab and it worked like a charm. Have you tried OneTab? If so, what is your impression of the extension?
