Guide: How to Run Plex and Other Web Apps in Chrome App Mode

Update (11/12/2018): It appears that the latest versions of Chrome removed the ‘Open as window’ option, so the steps outlined here may no longer work. Thanks to our commenters who pointed out this change to us. Google Chrome is a great way to run web-based applications such as Plex. But if you just load your web app into the standard Chrome interface, you might need a lot of unnecessary items up space, such as the address bar, bookmarks, and a list of active Chrome extensions. Running a web app in Chrome’s standard interface results in many additional items up space.

Further, if you use Chrome to browse the web normally while also using web-based applications, you can quit the app out of habit when you are done browsing and accidentally terminate your web app as well. The solution to these problems is to configure Chrome to run in app mode. This is a special mode that runs your web app as a separate process. It also removes all UI elements from the Chrome window. The idea is that everything you need should be in your web app interface, so you don’t need the normal Chrome interface. There are ways to always run Chrome in app mode for situations like public kiosks, but you can also configure special shortcuts that only run certain websites or web apps in app mode.

Create a shortcut to Chrome app mode

We’re using the Plex Web Player as our example, but you can use the steps here with any web app or even a standard website, depending on your needs. First, launch Chrome and go to the website or web app you want to configure. Once it loads, click on the Customize and Manage icon (three dots) in the top right corner of the window.Move your cursor over from that menu More tools then select Create a shortcut. A new Create Shortcut window appears up on the top. Give your shortcut any name (by default the page name of the website or web app). Then make sure the option Open as a window is checked.Click Create to complete the process and you will find a new shortcut on your desktop. If the website or web app had its own icon, it will be displayed with your new shortcut to app mode. If not, you’ll see the default Chrome icon instead (although you can customize the icon later if you want).

Run a Chrome App Mode Shortcut

Now double click on your new shortcut to launch the designated web app or website in Chrome app mode. You will see the familiar interface of your app or website, but all the standard Chrome UI elements have disappeared, making you look much cleaner.

Running a website or web app in Chrome app mode provides a clearer interface. You will also notice that the shortcut has opened its own separate Chrome process. You can check your Dock or taskbar depending on the operating system to see it. This means that while your app or website is still fully displayed in Chrome, it now works more like a separate standalone application, which should make using it alongside your normal browser windows much more convenient. And since you now have a dedicated shortcut for launching your designated site in Chrome app mode, you can move the shortcut from your desktop to wherever you want: the taskbar, the start menu, etc. You could even do it. to start automatically when you log in. . As mentioned earlier, you can configure any website to start in app mode. This feature best used with dedicated web apps or standalone websites. This is due to the lack of web mode UI elements that would make normal navigation difficult.
