Guide: How to Upgrade Firmware of SSD on a Windows Device

A Solid State Drive (SSD) has many advantages over traditional rotating hard drives with moving parts. It’s faster, slimmer, lasts longer, and is generally easier to maintain. Did I mention it’s faster? However, there may be a small thing that some owners may be neglecting. That’s the firmware. Do the right thing before you start an SOS | Shutterstock Since the launch of Windows 10, a number of manufacturers have rolled out updates to their SSD firmware. But non-technical owners were completely unaware of it because unlike the apps on your smartphone, these are not automatically upgraded unless you have the correct tools installed.

Why bother about firmware

The firmware of SSDs is essential for them to run smoothly and efficiently. Sometimes manufacturers are not notified of problems until after the product has been sold to customers, and sometimes it is a newer version of Windows, which can cause some problems. In any case, it is best to stay on top of the SSD firmware, especially if it is a powerful firmware that you rely 100% on.

Explore SSD models

The first and obvious step is to find out if you have an SSD or not. If so, by which manufacturer. If you already know all of this, you can skip this section. If not then go to the search box on your taskbar and type defragmenter and you will see the option below.

Clicking on it will open the Optimize Disks window and here you will see how many of your disks are SSDs and HDDs. Again, if you find that none of your drives are SSDs, stop reading and go to Netflix and Chill. If there is even one drive that is an SSD, find out which model it is. The best way to find out is to go to the My Computer screen and right-click on the drive you found, the SSD. In my case, it was C: drive, so I’ll right-click on it and then click Properties. From here, click on the Hardware tab and the name of the SSD maker will be revealed.

OEM tools only

Once you know who ran the SSD on your PC, it’s easier to figure things out. Every SSD maker, be it Intel or Samsung or Kingston or OCZ, has some sort of utility that can be used to upgrade the firmware. Let’s take my case where I found out I had an Intel SSD. A simple Google search later I found the Intel SSD Toolbox page, downloading and installing was easy.

Once I launched it, there was a nice layout with each tab clearly highlighting what it does. Clicking Upgrade Firmware revealed that I had an older version and the software automatically downloaded and installed the latest version for me. One reboot later, my SSD was now running the latest firmware and I can rest easy now.

Likewise, Samsung has its own utilities, Corsair its own, SanDisk its own, as do Crucial and OCZ. Some, like Kingston and OWC, offer a SandForce-based client, which is okay, but nothing extra. You could try a third-party tool like SSD Tweaker for this, but only as a last resort.

Not lax, upgrade now

Remember how much you had to save up for your precious SSD? Then why be careless and let a little old thing, like outdated firmware, damage it? Top up now. It’s not that difficult.
