When it comes to installing a VPN on Windows, the easiest way to do it is to go to the app itself. Most VPNs use their own software that automatically enables VPN connections on Windows. Here is how to do it.

Download the installer

For this instruction we use Private Internet Access for our VPN service. After choosing the monthly, quarterly, or annual subscription option, choose your payment method and make the purchase. After you have paid, you will receive an email instructing you to download the installer for the VPN software. After you have received and opened the email:

Download the Private Internet Access installer from the link in the email. After you have done that, we will proceed to put the VPN software package on your Windows 10 computer. The Private Internet Access website, where you bought the VPN software, opens. It will start downloading the installer through your web browser. When given the option, choose “Save As” and save the installer to your desktop. This way, it is easier to find and start the installation of the Private Internet Access VPN software installer.

Install VPN software

After the Private Internet Access download is complete, right click on it with your mouse and select ‘Run as administrator’. You will see a command prompt window open on your Windows screen. It will extract and install the necessary items to run the VPN software on your Windows 10 machine.
An installation box will ask for your permission to install the Private Internet Access VPN on your Windows 10 computer. Just click on “Install” button. Next, you want to change the connection type to TCP. To do this, right-click on the Private Internet Access icon in the system tray, at the bottom right of your Windows 10 taskbar. Go to and select “Settings” with your mouse. Then click on ‘Advanced’ button. Select “TCP” from the top drop-down list where UDP is shown as default.
