Guide: Mark All Emails Read in Gmail: Guide

Slack and Microsoft (with Microsoft Teams) are doing their best to replace the email. However, the standard email experience will remain. The majority still prefer to use Gmail and Outlook to keep up to date with bank updates, favorite newsletters, and recent social media events. Of all the email providers, Gmail is the most popular out there. Available by default on all Android devices, the service dominates the consumer email experience with over 1.5 billion monthly active users. Most users check the Gmail inbox once a week. Your inbox can get confused if you have a lot of subscriptions and banking activities. Gmail offers some features to create rules, mark all emails as read, and more. You may have seen users with thousands of unread emails on them mobile phonesIt makes the whole email experience difficult to navigate, and hundreds of emails might miss some important ones. In this post, we will discuss how to mark all emails as read in Gmail web and mobileWe will also include some of the tricks to improve your Gmail experience. Let’s start.

Mark all email as read in Gmail Web

There are multiple ways to mark all emails as read in Gmail web. Google does not provide a direct option to mark all emails as read. Go through the steps below to mark all emails as read in Gmail web. Step 1: Open the browser on your PC and go to Gmail. Step 2: Log in with your Google account credentials. Step 3: From the standard ‘Inbox’ menu, you will see your emails are neatly divided into Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums. Step 4: You’ll find the Search in email option at the top. Step 5: Type label: inbox is: unread in the search field at the top of the page.

Step 6: Gmail displays the first 20 unread messages in your inbox. Step 7: You can tap the three-dot menu and select the ‘Mark all as read’ option. You can also choose the ‘Select all’ option and tap the down arrow icon and select ‘Read’ from the drop-down menu.

You can also tap on the ‘Select all’ option in each section and mark all emails as read. But I will not recommend using that option as you may be missing some of the important emails in the process.

You have to follow the steps above, have a look at the unread emails and if everything seems fine then you should use the mark all as read option.

Mark all email as read in Gmail Mobile App

Usually, I recommend that you mark all emails as read from the Gmail web. The experience on the mobile is not as intuitive as the internet. As regards mobile apps, both Android and iOS have an identical user interface and UX for the Gmail app. For this post, I’m using the screenshots from the Android app. You can expect the same steps in iOS Gmail app to mark all emails as read. Step 1: Open the Gmail app on your phone Step 2: Tap the hamburger menu and scroll down to the app settings.

Step 3: Go to your Gmail account. Step 4: The Inbox type is set as Default. Tap on it and select Unread First.

Step 5: Go back to your Gmail inbox and you will see all your unread emails by default homeTap the hamburger menu and you will find a new ‘Unread’ tab. Step 6: Tap the ‘Unread’ tab and view all unread emails in your inbox. Long press on an email to select it. Then tap the profile picture of all emails to select them. Step 7: Tap the ‘Read’ icon at the top to mark the selected items as read in Gmail mobile app.

You can also type label: inbox is: unread in the search bar above, and Gmail will filter the unread emails from the Inbox. Select them and mark the emails as read.

Keep unread inbox at the top in Gmail Web

Google offers an option to leave unread emails at the top of the Inbox. Navigating every tab in Gmail can be confusing. You can always use the Advanced Settings option in Gmail to streamline the Inbox experience. Follow the steps below to enable the unread inbox at the top of Gmail. Step 1: Open the browser on your PC and go to Gmail. Step 2: Log in with your Google account credentials. Step 3: Tap the settings icon in the top right corner.
