Guide: Pocket Casts vs Google Podcasts: Comparison and Review

Well, I admit I’m late for the podcast scene. I recently discovered a way to create routines in Google Assistant where I can listen to my favorite podcasts with a simple command. That opened up new possibilities and newer ways to access information and consume news. Of course I started looking for podcast players. My first choice was Google Podcasts because I thought it would play well with Assistant also owned by Google. My colleagues then recommended Pocket Casts to me and said it’s much better to discover and host podcasts. Let’s see if Pocket Casts is indeed better at dealing with podcasts than Google Podcasts. And if so, what else does it offer? Let’s find out.

1. User interface and experience

The material design theme that Google has adopted for so many apps is fully visible in Podcasts. You’ll see a list of all the podcasts you have subscribed to at the top with a way to browse new, current, and downloaded podcasts. Scroll a little further and you’ll find options to discover trending and top podcasts from a variety of niches. The user interface is uncluttered, easy to use and has few options to distract you.

Pocket Casts has a better user interface with a navigation bar at the bottom with four self-explanatory tabs. I liked the Discovery tab, which makes it easy to search for new podcasts using categories.

Then there’s the Filters tab where you can browse your subscribed podcasts and even create new filters, giving you more granular control over podcasts using lists. Finally, there is the Profile tab that shows you some interesting statistics about your listening habits.

2. Discover and manage podcasts

It’s amazing how neatly everything is organized in Google Podcasts after you notice that the app has a single screen layout with no menu or tabs. A minimalist approach works, but only up to a certain extent. I had to scroll a lot to find all the possible categories that Podcasts had to offer. Go back and forth, or rather up and down, felt like I was wasting time. Clicking on a podcast will bring up more options. You can subscribe, donate if you like their work and listen to individual podcasts.

With Pocket Casts, all my podcasts I have subscribed to are available in a separate tab. I can subscribe to a podcast directly from the Discovery tab without going in. However, when you tap on a podcast, you will see more details such as site link, publisher information, and release frequency. No donation option.

All podcasts are neatly organized by categories and you can set the region at the bottom of the screen. That will change the featured podcasts in all categories. Google automatically lists podcasts based on your location, which is cool, but what if I want to change my region?

3. Listening to podcasts

Google Podcasts offers plenty of options to play with when listening to your favorite podcast. You can skip podcasts back and forth and change the reading speed if you want to listen quickly and save some time. Clicking on the speed option reveals another cool one featureYou can trim silent parts of a podcast where no one is talking. There is also a sleep timer function if you listen to podcasts in your bed.

Pocket Casts offers all features existing in Google Podcasts and continues. There is a sleep timer and an option to skip podcasts forward and back a few seconds. I like the bookmark feature marked with a star. Doing so will save the podcast episode to my profile so I can revisit it in the future. When you tap the Timer button, there is an extra option called Volume boost, which boosts the volume, and it works. However, I never felt the need for it as I always use headphones. Handy if you’re surrounded by noise and don’t have headphones with you.

4. Pocket Casts Features

Pocket Casts comes with several extras features that are not yet available on Google Podcasts. Skip forward is set to 30 seconds by default, while skip backward is set to 10 seconds on both. However, Pocket Casts allows you to change that value to whatever you want. You can also choose to be notified of new podcasts.

As you must have noticed, there is a dark theme, and it is no less true black. You can control what happens when the podcast is over. You can archive completed podcasts that are also removed from downloads. You can download all new episodes or just the ones attached to it Up following list. There is also a Wi-Fi setting so you don’t accidentally download podcasts over a metered connection.

Last but not least, you can add podcasts to your Up next list and listen to them in any order with drag and drop – more flexibility.

5. Platforms and Prices

Well, Google Podcasts is completely free with no ads. Add to this the fact that Google Assistant has native support for it so you can create routines with your favorite podcast, and it’s a solid competitor. Pocket Casts isn’t lagging behind, though. It will cost you $ 3.99, but comes with a lot of options, settings and features that you will use. In addition, Google Assistant also supports Pocket Casts, but you cannot add them to your routines. You must also say the name of the app after asking the Assistant to play a podcast episode. If you just ask him to play the next episode of TED, the first preference will be Google Podcasts, and that’s no surprise.

Interestingly, it is reported that Google Podcasts is coming up with a new one feature called Episode Search, where the podcast’s full transcript will be available for you to search for specific keywords. Powerful podcast users will love that feature Google Podcasts for Android Finally, Google Podcasts is available on the web and Android. Pocket Casts for Android Pocket Casts for iOS Meanwhile, Pocket Casts is available on both Android and iOS, but not a web version. If you want Google Podcasts on iOS, you need to use Assistant and ask it to play the podcast.

Podcasts are Radio 2.0

Podcasts are to radio what Netflix was to cable. Both Google Podcasts and Pocket Casts are solid podcast apps, but Pocket Casts has so much more to offer. If you’re just starting out, try Google Podcasts first as it’s free and pretty good. If you’re an experienced user or just want to replace your old podcast app, try Pocket Casts.
