Setting Up Microsoft Edge Chromium on Mac: Guide – Guide

The change is not about appearance, however; one of the main reasons for the decision to use the Chromium engine was to provide better compatibility for sites and extensions, reducing fragmentation for developers.

Installing Microsoft Edge Chromium on Mac

Go to the Microsoft Edge download page using any installed browser, such as Safari, on your Mac. The site will automatically detect the correct operating system – click Download for macOS button to obtain the Microsoft Edge installation package. During the final stage of the installation process, click Move to trash to get rid of the installer package – it is unnecessary and helps to release up space on your Mac. Finally, click Close to exit the Microsoft Edge Installer.

Getting Started Up

After the installation procedure, Microsoft Edge Chromium will start automatically on your Mac. Otherwise, go to your Mac’s Launchpad and click on the Microsoft Edge icon to launch it up. The browser should greet you with a home screen – click Get started. Then it will try to guide you through three steps to help you define up your browser – import data from Chrome, select a new guide page layout and sign in with a Microsoft account. You have more control over all of these actions when you are in the actual web browser, so skip these steps to get to the main browser area.

New tab layout

Microsoft Edge Chromium tabs have a lot of news. There is a search bar at the top of the screen, a shortcut area (or quick links) and a news feed that you can access by scrolling down. If you like the standard layout, feel free to keep it. But if you want to change that, start by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Next, you’ll see three different page layouts – Focused, Inspirational (which is the default) and Informational. Both Inspirational and Informational will show a background image (which is updated daily) and a news feed. Informational can be quite disturbing as it puts the news at the center of your attention. The inspiration is less, as the feed is out of normal view. Focused, on the other hand, removes the background and puts its focus on shortcuts and the search bar – you can still scroll down to access the news feed. If you want to turn off news from any of the layouts, or if you want to create your own layout, select Custom. You can then select Offline Content to completely turn off the news feed. You can also disable or enable quick links and the background of the tab using the toggle buttons provided.

Customize appearance

In addition to modifying the tab layout, you can further customize the appearance of Microsoft Edge by accessing the Microsoft Edge Settings panel. To do this, open the Edge menu (click the three dot icon at the top right of the screen) and click Settings. When in the Browser Settings screen, switch to the Appearance side tab. You can then make a number of changes, from changing the font and font size in use, adding a Home button to the user interface, hiding the buttonsetc Favorites and Collections. You can also activate a dark theme or make it match the system color scheme on your Mac – select Dark or System default using the menu next to Theme. In addition, you can use this workaround to render web pages in dark mode as well.

Import browser data

Microsoft Edge Chromium allows you to easily import browsing data from Chrome, Safari or Firefox. This makes the entire browser switching process much easier. Start by going to Edge Settings> Profiles> Import browser data. You will find a pop-up where you can choose the browser from which to import your data. After selecting the data forms you want to import, click Import. Then, use the Favorites and History options in the Edge menu to view your imported favorites and history. You can access other forms of data (passwords, payment information, etc.) through the Profile section of the Settings screen. Since Chrome is also based on the Chromium engine, Microsoft Edge offers more options when importing data from Google’s browser (such as the ability to select the exact browser profile to get your data). For more details, check out this walkthrough.

Sync your data

Microsoft Edge Chromium allows you to sync your browsing data to and from other devices – iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows. It also helps to store your data securely on Microsoft servers. Start by going to Edge Settings> Profiles. Click Sign in and enter your Microsoft Account credentials when prompted. If you don’t have a Microsoft account, you can create one for free – it’s worth it. In the pop-up Sync Your Profile-up page showing up, click Customize. You can then specify the exact forms of browsing data you want to sync – Favorites, Settings, etc. When you’re done, click Confirm. To manage Microsoft Edge Sync settings later, go to Edge Settings> Sync.

Install extensions

Microsoft Edge sports support for a decent – and growing – library of extensions. Start by going to Microsoft Edge Addons store. You can then search for the extensions you want to install or filter them by category – Productivity, Accessibility, Social, etc. If you see an extension you like, click Get and Add extension. After installing an extension, you can access it by clicking its icon on the right side of the Microsoft Edge address bar. To manage your extensions, open the Edge menu and click Extensions. You can then disable, enable or remove any extension. You can also access Microsoft Edge Addons store through this screen. Microsoft Edge even allows you to install extensions from other Chromium-based browser stores – notably the Chrome Web Store. For, check out this step by step.

Standard search engine

Bing is the default search engine for address bar searches in Microsoft Edge Chromium. But you can change it to Google or Yahoo right away. Start by going to Edge Settings> Privacy and services> Address bar. Click the drop-down menu next to the search engine used in the address bar and select Google or Yahoo. You can also set other search engines (like DuckDuckGo) by default and even make the new tab page point to another search engine. But the process is a little complicated.

Tracking prevention

Forget installing third-party content blocking extensions. Microsoft Edge comes with its own integrated Tracking Prevention module that makes preserving your privacy a breeze. Start by going to Edge Settings> Privacy and services. Select an appropriate Tracking Prevention level – Basic, Balanced (default setting) or Strict. Basic blocks the least amount of crawlers, but keeps malicious scripts at bay. The Balanced level prevents third-party scripts from tracking you and helps you avoid personalized ads. And Strict blocks almost all crawlers and ads, but it can break certain sites in the process.

Default browser

It’s best to test Microsoft Edge Chromium before making it the default browser on your Mac. But if you want to get straight to the point, then here’s how to do it. Go to the Apple menu> System Preferences> General. Use the drop-down menu next to Standard Web Browser and select Microsoft Edge. This should make Microsoft Edge the default browser on your Mac, so that any links you click on will automatically open through it.
